On November 3, millions of Americans will head to the polls. At first glance, this might look like another political event. But for investors, traders and cryptocurrency enthusiasts, the 2026 US midterm elections could become one of the most important market catalysts of the year.
And here's the interesting part: Bitcoin could be affected even if the election results have nothing directly to do with cryptocurrencies.
Why? Because the outcome could influence taxes, government spending, energy policies, financial regulation and, ultimately, the economic environment in which digital assets operate.
The real question isn't simply which political party wins. It's what the new balance of power in Washington could mean for financial markets.
Let's break down three possible scenarios and explore what investors should be watching.
Why Should Bitcoin Investors Care About US Midterms?
The November 3 elections will determine the composition of the US Congress.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election, along with approximately one-third of the Senate. The presidential election is not taking place, but the results could significantly change the government's ability to implement its economic agenda.
The new Congress will take office in January 2027.
For traditional investors, the implications are relatively straightforward: taxation, government spending, corporate policies and economic regulation.
For crypto investors, however, there are two additional factors:
-
Regulatory clarity: The political balance could influence the future of legislation affecting cryptocurrency exchanges, stablecoins and digital asset markets.
-
Market liquidity: Fiscal decisions can influence inflation expectations, Treasury yields and the broader financial conditions that often affect Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
This distinction is important.
A government that appears more supportive of crypto doesn't automatically guarantee a Bitcoin rally. If Treasury yields rise, the dollar strengthens and investors become more defensive, cryptocurrencies could still struggle.
In other words, political optimism and market performance don't always move in the same direction.
What History Tells Us About the Stock Market After Midterms
There is an interesting historical pattern worth considering.
According to XTB Research, which analyzed 19 US midterm election cycles dating back to 1950, the S&P 500 recorded:
-
An average return of approximately +1.1% during the 120 days preceding the elections.
-
An average return of approximately +13% during the 120 days following the elections.
Even more interestingly, all 19 historical periods examined showed positive performance approximately six months after the elections.
That's an impressive historical record.
But before getting too excited, there's an important distinction: historical performance is not a guarantee of future returns.
These 19 periods include very different economic environments, interest-rate cycles and geopolitical situations. Elections themselves cannot explain every market movement.
Still, one possible explanation is that markets dislike uncertainty.
Once the political outcome becomes clearer, investors can begin assessing the actual economic consequences instead of speculating about multiple possible scenarios.
And that reduction in uncertainty can sometimes create a more favorable environment for equities.
But can the same pattern be applied to Bitcoin?
Not so quickly.
Bitcoin has experienced only four US midterm elections since its creation: 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.
That's an extremely small sample.
The 2022 cycle is particularly difficult to interpret because the FTX collapse occurred just days after the election, creating a major independent shock for the cryptocurrency market.
Therefore, claiming that Bitcoin always rises after US midterms would be misleading.
Three Possible Political Scenarios That Could Move Markets
Instead of trying to predict which party will win, I believe it's more useful to understand what different congressional outcomes could mean for investors.
Scenario 1: The White House and Congress Remain Aligned
If the same political party controls the presidency and both chambers of Congress, passing legislation could become easier.
Potential tax reductions could support corporate earnings, while increased government spending could stimulate economic activity.
For Bitcoin, the implications would be less direct.
If investors interpret the resulting economic environment as favorable for growth and risk-taking, demand for cryptocurrencies could benefit.
However, there's another side to the equation.
Tax cuts and additional spending without sufficient financing could increase concerns about the federal deficit. If investors demand higher yields to hold US government debt, financial conditions could tighten.
And higher yields aren't necessarily good news for Bitcoin.
Scenario 2: Congress Becomes Divided
A divided government could make major legislative changes more difficult.
This might reduce the probability of sudden policy shifts and encourage companies to operate within a more predictable regulatory environment.
However, political disagreements could also create uncertainty around government funding, taxation and spending decisions.
For crypto, the situation would depend heavily on bipartisan cooperation.
Some regulatory initiatives might continue moving forward, while others could face significant delays.
A divided Congress isn't automatically bullish or bearish. The details of the legislation matter much more than the political headlines.
Scenario 3: The Opposition Controls Both Chambers
If the opposition gains control of both the House and Senate, the legislative balance could change substantially.
The administration might face greater difficulties implementing its economic agenda, while congressional oversight could increase.
Some proposed policies could be delayed or blocked.
For investors, the important question would be whether this creates greater uncertainty or prevents potentially disruptive legislative changes.
There is also a constitutional limitation worth remembering: the president retains veto power, and overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers.
Consequently, even a major electoral victory doesn't mean that every political promise can immediately become law.
Bitcoin and Crypto Regulation: The CLARITY Act Matters
One of the most interesting aspects of these elections for cryptocurrency investors is regulatory policy.
The United States has been working toward a clearer framework for digital assets, but progress hasn't always been smooth.
A particularly relevant example is the CLARITY Act.
On September 15, 2026, a procedural Senate vote to advance H.R. 3633 failed, with 49 votes in favor and 50 against.
This was not a final vote rejecting the entire legislation. Nevertheless, it demonstrated how difficult it can be to build sufficient political support for major crypto regulatory reforms.
The GENIUS Act, which became law in July 2025, represents a separate development focused on stablecoin regulation.
These distinctions matter because cryptocurrency regulation isn't one single issue.
Rules governing stablecoins, exchanges, market structure and digital asset classification can have different consequences for different parts of the industry.
A more crypto-friendly Congress could potentially accelerate regulatory clarity.
That could encourage institutional participation, improve confidence in regulated platforms and create a more predictable environment for companies operating in the sector.
But there's no guarantee that every cryptocurrency would benefit equally.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins and smaller altcoins face different regulatory and economic challenges.
The Federal Reserve Could Be More Important Than the Election
Here's something I wouldn't ignore.
Even if the election produces a result that cryptocurrency investors consider positive, the Federal Reserve could still dominate market sentiment.
On October 28, the Fed maintained its benchmark interest-rate range at 3.75%–4.00%, while inflation remained a concern.
The midterm elections do not determine monetary policy. The Federal Reserve operates independently when making interest-rate decisions.
However, fiscal policies introduced by Congress can influence economic growth, government borrowing and inflation expectations.
And that's where the connection with Bitcoin becomes particularly interesting.
Consider two different environments:
-
Lower real yields, a weaker dollar and improving liquidity could create favorable conditions for risk assets, including Bitcoin.
-
Higher real yields, a stronger dollar and tighter financial conditions could make speculative investments less attractive.
This is why I wouldn't focus exclusively on political headlines.
If Bitcoin starts rising after November 3, investors should also examine what is happening to Treasury yields, the US dollar and equity markets.
Sometimes the biggest catalyst isn't the one receiving the most attention.
What About Gold, Oil and the S&P 500?
The election could also create opportunities and risks across traditional financial markets.
The S&P 500
Corporate taxation, government spending and sector-specific regulation could influence earnings expectations.
Banks, healthcare companies, defense contractors, infrastructure businesses and energy producers might react differently to the same political outcome.
The US Dollar
Fiscal policy and government borrowing could influence expectations about US economic growth and interest rates.
For European investors, currency movements are particularly important. A weaker dollar against the euro can reduce the euro-denominated return of an unhedged investment in US assets.
Gold
Gold could benefit from increased uncertainty and demand for defensive assets.
However, higher real interest rates and a stronger dollar can create pressure on its price.
Political uncertainty alone doesn't guarantee a gold rally.
Oil and Energy
Energy policies, environmental regulations, incentives and drilling permits could influence the long-term prospects of companies operating in this sector.
Nevertheless, global demand, production levels and geopolitical developments will remain important drivers of oil prices.
The lesson is simple: different assets react to different economic mechanisms. Investors should look beyond political labels.
The Dates Crypto Investors Should Watch
November 3 is only the beginning.
Several important economic events follow the election and could influence how markets interpret the results.
Here's a short calendar worth keeping in mind (Italian time):
-
November 3: US midterm elections and JOLTS job openings data.
-
November 4: Initial market reactions as election results become clearer.
-
November 6: US employment report, including payrolls and unemployment data.
-
November 10: US Consumer Price Index (CPI), an important indicator of inflation.
-
January 3, 2027: The new Congress officially begins its term.
For Bitcoin investors, I would pay particular attention to the employment and inflation reports.
If economic data changes expectations about future Fed decisions, the resulting market reaction could outweigh the immediate impact of the election.
My Take: Don't Bet on a Political Winner. Watch the Money.
Personally, I think the most interesting opportunity surrounding the 2026 midterms isn't predicting which party will control Congress.
It's understanding how the resulting political balance could influence the flow of money through the financial system.
Bitcoin has become increasingly connected to traditional financial markets, especially following the approval of US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products in January 2024.
Institutional participation has changed the structure of the market, making macroeconomic conditions particularly important.
That doesn't mean Bitcoin has lost its independence or long-term value proposition.
It means that investors need to consider more variables than they did during previous market cycles.
A favorable regulatory environment could support long-term adoption. But if liquidity deteriorates and borrowing costs rise, even positive crypto legislation might not produce an immediate price rally.
My approach would be to monitor three things after November 3:
-
The new balance of power in Congress and the likelihood of progress on crypto legislation.
-
The direction of US Treasury yields and the dollar.
-
Whether institutional demand for Bitcoin strengthens or weakens.
These three factors could tell us much more than the headlines celebrating an electoral victory.
The November 3 elections might change Washington, but the real question for investors is whether they will change the direction of money.
And that is what could ultimately matter for Bitcoin.
