VanEck's Matthew Siegel on the Path to Approval for Solana ETFs

Matthew Siegel, Head of Research at VanEck, has detailed the steps that companies must navigate to secure regulatory approval for launching spot Solana ETFs in the United States.

The Growing Trend of Cryptocurrency Spot ETFs

Spot ETFs for various cryptocurrencies have recently surged in popularity among financial instruments in the US, primarily because they grant institutional investors access to digital assets. Matthew Siegel from VanEck has examined the regulatory environment in the United States and discussed the potential for exchange-traded funds based on Solana (SOL) to emerge.

VanEck's View on Solana-ETFs Potential

Matthew Siegel considers Solana a promising candidate for its own exchange-traded fund, asserting that launching a SOL-ETF is highly feasible. He noted that Solana shares similar attributes with Ethereum (ETH), suggesting that the process for launching a Solana-based ETF could be as smooth as that for Ethereum-based funds.

"Approval of ETF products will affirm Ethereum's status as a commodity. The same applies to Solana," Siegel mentioned in an interview with Sonali Basak and Tim Stenovec on Bloomberg Crypto.

Siegel believes that the existing futures for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) do not pose a barrier. The key is to adopt the same regulatory approach for Solana spot ETFs that has been applied to similar instruments for Ethereum.

Additionally, Siegel highlighted that numerous ETFs exist regardless of their specific relevance, citing examples such as ETFs on delivery services, uranium, and energy.

Regulatory Challenges and Administrative Changes

Siegel emphasized that the main issue remains the evolving regulatory environment in Washington, particularly the decisions made by the current SEC Chairman, Gary Gensler.

"Everything hinges on the SEC chairman. If Gensler remains in office, nothing will change unless he receives new directives on regulating this asset class," Siegel remarked.

Matthew Siegel is not alone in this belief. Analysts from Galaxy Digital and Bloomberg, along with Eric Balchunas, acknowledge the regulatory and political hurdles.

"Yes, the likelihood of SOL ETF approval in the next 12 months is linked to the chances of a change in the White House, and those chances are higher now than before... Although it's too early to provide specific numbers," Balchunas commented.

VanEck's Confidence in Solana's Market Leadership

Matthew Siegel revealed that VanEck analysts are optimistic about Solana's potential to become a leading blockchain in the market. This confidence is based on reports from early July indicating that Solana outperformed Ethereum in memcoins by 800%. The introduction of a SOL-based ETF could further bolster Solana's market position.

VanEck was one of the initial asset managers to file an application with the SEC to create such an instrument, preceded only by 3iQ Corporation. Shortly after VanEck, 21Shares also announced their application submission.
