Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said at the annual central bankers' symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, that the time is ripe to begin a cycle of interest rate cuts. The event, titled "Reassessing the Effectiveness and Transmission of Monetary Policy," was the focus of attention for Powell's speech, which confirmed expectations of an imminent rate cut.
The Federal Reserve is expected to cut rates by 25 basis points as early as the next meeting of the FOMC, the committee that decides the monetary policy of the Fed, scheduled for September 19 and 20. This decision would be in line with the indications that emerged from the recent FOMC minutes, where a large majority of members expressed themselves in favor of a reduction. Among those supporting the cut is Patrick Harker, president of the Philadelphia Fed, who has publicly stated the need to begin reducing rates in September.
In his speech, Powell stressed that the size and frequency of future cuts will depend on incoming economic data, suggesting a cautious and gradual approach to avoid potential complications. Despite the likelihood of a cut in September, Powell warned that there will be no quick return to the low rates of the pandemic period, indicating that the process will take time.
In conclusion, all eyes are now on the next FOMC meeting, during which the final decision on US interest rates will be made.
