Arthur Hayes, former CEO of BitMEX and a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency community, has issued a warning about the potential repercussions of Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025. Hayes foresees a significant market correction, particularly in the crypto sector, shortly after Trump’s inauguration.
The market has responded enthusiastically to Trump’s electoral victory, with Bitcoin surging past the $100,000 mark and the broader crypto sector experiencing a sustained bullish trend throughout late 2024. However, Hayes cautions that this optimism may be premature and overly optimistic. He argues that the high expectations regarding regulatory reforms under the new administration are unlikely to be realized quickly or fully.
According to Hayes, the market will face the harsh reality that Trump will have limited time to implement substantial policy changes early in his presidency. This disillusionment could trigger a sharp sell-off in cryptocurrencies and a significant correction in equities aligned with Trump’s political agenda. “The realization that concrete changes will take much longer to materialize will lead to a fierce liquidation in crypto markets,” Hayes stated.
Much of the optimism stems from Trump’s campaign rhetoric, promising significant advancements in the crypto space. However, Hayes stresses that addressing the underlying domestic and international challenges tied to the sector will take years, if not decades. This gap between expectations and reality may lead to what Hayes describes as a "buyer’s disappointment" and a subsequent downturn in market sentiment.
Hayes also indicates that he plans to reduce his own crypto holdings before January 20, 2025, in anticipation of the potential downturn. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that this forecast could be upended by bullish investor sentiment, which might sustain market momentum despite structural challenges.
Ultimately, the true impact of Trump’s inauguration on the crypto market will only become clear in early 2025, as investors react to the new administration's initial actions and signals.
