In March this year, Bitcoin hit a new all-time high at $73,800. Since that time, the leading cryptocurrency has suffered a loss in value of around 30%. Meanwhile, German authorities have started liquidating large amounts of bitcoin on the market. Finbold analysts estimated how many coins were recently sold by the German government. According to Lookonchain, the sales began on June 26, when 750 BTC, worth more than $46 million, were sent to the Kraken, Coinbase, and Bitsamp platforms.
On July 1, authorities sold another 1,500 BTC worth $94.7 million. This transaction was quickly followed by an additional sale of 832.7 BTC on July 2nd. On July 4, another 3,000 bitcoins were sold for a total of $174 million. Today, an additional 543 coins worth $30 million were transferred.
Over the past 10 days, German authorities have sold a total of 6,625 bitcoins. 39,816 BTC remain in the government balance sheet, with a total value of over $2 billion. Bundestag member Joana Kotar has criticized the German government's recent decision to sell a significant portion of its bitcoin reserves.
Assessing the situation, Kotar emphasized that in the United States, bitcoin is considered one of the main reserve currencies. Addressing key German officials (Minister of Saxony, President, Head of the Ministry of Finance and Chancellor), Kotar urged them to reconsider the adopted strategy. She also invited officials to attend an upcoming conference on “Bitcoin Strategies for Nation States” scheduled for October 17, 2024.
