According to a recent report by River, over the next 18 months, approximately 10% of U.S. companies are expected to allocate 1.5% of their reserves, totaling around $10.35 trillion, into Bitcoin. This projection is based on the growing trend of corporate adoption of Bitcoin as a reserve asset, mirroring the approach pioneered by MicroStrategy, a leading business intelligence firm known for its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy.
MicroStrategy’s founder, Michael Saylor, has been a vocal proponent of Bitcoin as a long-term investment, dubbing it “economic immortality” and claiming that it can offer corporations a way to achieve enduring financial stability. Under Saylor's leadership, MicroStrategy has invested heavily in Bitcoin, purchasing $805 million worth of the cryptocurrency in the second quarter of 2024 alone. This brought the company's total Bitcoin holdings to 226,500 BTC, solidifying its status as one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin globally. Saylor himself has disclosed that his personal Bitcoin holdings are worth more than $1 billion, reinforcing his commitment to the digital asset.
River’s report indicates that this corporate trend is likely to continue, with U.S. companies expected to buy between 204 BTC to 519 BTC daily until 2026. This forecast is fueled by the growing belief in Bitcoin’s potential to act as a hedge against economic uncertainty and inflation. The report highlights that MicroStrategy’s strategy is influencing other companies to follow suit, positioning Bitcoin as a key component of corporate treasury strategies.
Moreover, the trend is not limited to individual companies; institutional adoption is also on the rise. As of the first quarter of 2024, 13 out of the 25 largest hedge funds in the U.S. had exposure to Bitcoin through various investment products. This indicates a broader institutional confidence in the cryptocurrency’s long-term value and potential as a financial asset.
Overall, the River report underscores a significant shift in corporate and institutional attitudes toward Bitcoin, suggesting that more companies will integrate the cryptocurrency into their financial reserves in the coming months. This movement could lead to a substantial increase in Bitcoin demand and further validate its role as a mainstream financial asset, driven by the belief that it can provide corporations with a safeguard against economic volatility and a path to sustained financial resilience.
