9 things we do in waiting rooms to look busy and sane

Nobody's watching. Everybody's watching.

There is no room on planet Earth more psychologically hostile than the waiting room. Fluorescent lights doing crime scene lighting. A TV playing a home renovation show nobody asked for. And forty-five minutes stretching out in front of you like a desert with nothing to do but sit there and be a person, out loud, in public.

So we cope. We build tiny performances of normalcy. We construct an entire one-act play called "I Am Fine and Definitely Not Losing It" for an audience of a receptionist and a guy reading a golf magazine from 2019.

I have starred in this play more times than I can count. Let's get into the cast of characters we all become the second that waiting room door closes behind us.

1. The phone scroller who isn't actually reading anything
You're not on Instagram. You're not on email. You're just moving your thumb up and down on a blank feed of nothing, letting your eyeballs unfocus, because looking at your phone is the universal symbol for "please do not attempt small talk with me." It's a force field made of a cracked screen and pure will.

2.Β The aggressive form filler
Give this woman a clipboard and watch her become a Fortune 500 CEO. Every box checked with authority. Every signature a flex. Filling out your insurance information has never once required this much confidence, and yet.

3. The one who suddenly remembers every text they never answered
Something about sitting still for more than ninety seconds triggers a full guilt inventory. Suddenly you're replying to your cousin from March. You're apologizing to a group chat for a joke nobody remembers. Waiting rooms turn you into your most responsible self, three months too late.

4. The magazine archaeologist
There's always one person flipping through a magazine so old it references a president as "the current president" incorrectly. They're not reading it. They're just turning pages at a steady rhythm because the sound of paper feels more socially acceptable than the sound of silence.

5. The person who studies the fish tank like it owes them money
If there's an aquarium, someone will stand in front of it with their hands behind their back like they're at the Louvre. Fully committed. Whispering "there he is" to a single orange fish that does not know it's being narrated.

6. The fake nap
Eyes closed, head tilted just enough, breathing suspiciously even. Not asleep. Never asleep. Just buying twenty minutes of not having to make eye contact with the sad plant in the corner or the family arguing quietly about whether Grandpa took his pill.

7. The one rehearsing what they're going to say to the doctor
Lips moving slightly. Eyebrows doing a whole performance. They've written and rewritten this speech nine times and by the time they're finally called back they will forget every word of it and just say "it hurts, over here, sometimes" and call it a day.

8. The compulsive hand sanitizer
Every three minutes. Whether they touched anything or not. There's a specific kind of waiting room anxiety that makes you distrust your own hands like they've been conspiring against you the whole time.

9. The eavesdropper who insists they're not
Staring dead ahead at a wall, expression totally neutral, while absorbing every single word of the phone call happening two chairs down like it's the finale of a prestige drama. You will think about this stranger's custody battle for weeks.

At the end of the day, a waiting room is just a bunch of strangers pretending really hard that we're all handling it, individually and collectively, one fake yawn and one aggressive clipboard signature at a time. Nobody in there is fine. Everybody in there is performing fine. And somehow that shared, silent agreement to fake it together is its own weird little kindness.

They just called your name. Good luck out there.
