I purchased a 5060TI 16GB. From a technical and value standpoint I like the GPU. I paid MSRP.
From a software standpoint 50xx appears to be a bit of a nightmare.
I bought this thing for AI and hashcat during the summer.
Bazzite :
- Drivers aren't up to date enough
- Doesn't properly support CUDA as of last Feb.
Kali :
- What GPU?
Parrot :
- We know what driver you need but we won't let you install it.
Arch:
- Wouldn't update due to the ongoing ddos so I gave up.
pop_OS!
- Says it works. Claims it works. It doesn't work. They even sell this GPU in their PC but their driver doesn't support CUDA.
Nobara :
- Holy grail. It worked out the box. No problems. I have my CUDA and I have my hashcat.
I tried Bazzite first. Fedora kionite variants are predictable and stable. It was a fail but at least a fast one.You know what you are going to get and it's not going to break down.
I then tried Kali because normally Kali runs on everything for me. This is the first "anything" I have had that didn't work in Kali.
Then I did Parrot. You can say "pretty please" (f**king F***) to parrot for sudo and it was a good chance to vent. Parrot sadly made me say "pretty please" [you] a lot. 2 days of searching and trying led to no avail. I like Parrot and still have it on a partition. Parrot will tell you what you need and that you can't install. You can try forcing it. I did. You'll probably break it like I did which made me say "pretty please" [you] and move on.
I wanted to try arch but installing or updating that weekend was hard. Arch got hit by a cyber attack.
I haven't used Pop_OS! in ages so I tried. Same issues as parrot, but at least parrot admits not supporting the GPU. System76 sells the GPU and needs to update their software. They claim to support yet they don't support CUDA on the GPU they are selling in their PC.
[This was as of August and I hope has changed]
Finally I tried Nobara. God Bless Glorious Eggroll.
You can get a 5060ti 16GB to work in Linux with Hashcat. Can now verify. Thank "pretty please" god.
**update**:
This article was written during the summer, but my annoyance with NVidia still stands.
In a QuebesOS Debian HVM VM it works around 3x faster than Nobara on ML and enterprise workloads. You can not play games though in QubesOS. Nobara is best if you are gaming. I can't even get Goat simulator to run in QubesOS(as a joke).
Bazzite, SteamOS, and Parrot were all very bad experiences with this card.
