This article is a continuation of John's life changing story.
If you haven't read the initial article I suggest you back track in my log files and check out Log #06A Away From Familiarity. John was my workmate. But before we met, John had a life story worthy enough for me to share to you guys. And I hope reading about his experiences will bring us determination and inspire us to be better versions of ourselves.
Since he was hired as dish washer in the fast food chain, his stomach had never been empty again for days. Way before that when nothing to eat, he just sleep tame the hunger. And when there's a funeral nearby, he consider's it a blessing. Attending a funeral wake gives free coffee and biscuits.
While working as dish washer, he met new people. He then met his partner, a guy who proposed to him to live together. That's when John had finally lived under a roof. Unfortunately as doors open some windows close, he was fired from the job several weeks after. And was accused of stealing. He is a beggar but stealing was not in his vocabulary. Nonetheless he had no chance in winning against tenured employees who were jealous because he was hired even without the full qualifications the fast food chain were looking for but out of mercy from the supervisor.
Without the job, John stayed at home. He washes the clothes of his partner, cook food and act like a wife. But love fades. So as their physical attraction. His partner had a relationship with another guy. And so John left. It wasn't his partner's house in the first place. He had no rights to be there and he was heartbroken. John went back from a young man with a roof in his head to a homeless young man again.
But this time, he promised himself to do better. He had saved few money to pay for rent and some food. With this he vowed to save money so he can go back home. But there was no opportunity for a job. One day while he was out he bumped into a call center training hub. John who is confident with his English literacy decided to try. There's no shaming in trying anyway. He does not know what work call center folks do but what he knows is that no matter job is available he will take it. He had been to several odd jobs already, jumping from one to another but whenever he applies for job with regular or even basic pay he fails. The call center literacy training he had endured had help him look for a job. Which he had made a career out of it.
How did a beggar turned to walk into the corporate ladder? One thing I can see is that he started crossing the line.
He had college level education but never had the chance to use it until his eyes were open. I assume he was a college drop out before he went away to Manila. But when you're alone in place you are not familiar with with no place to stay and no money to spend, you sometimes reduce yourself into a minuscule level.
Lesson Learned
If you have the talent. Use it to your advantage. Keep going, never stop believing you can do it.
