Dear Friends,
Do you think it is really possible to stabilise your mind by yourself?
Come, let's deep dive into our discussions with that.
You know, when we first attempt to learn how to ride a bicycle, the bike remains beyond our control. It frequently causes us to fall and sustains injuries. However, through persistent and unwavering effort, we eventually master the skill and bring the bicycle under our command. Thereafter, the bicycle moves in perfect harmony with our will.
The very same principle applies to our mind. A bicycle is, after all, an inanimate object; our mind, however, is akin to a wild, unbridled monkey, wandering aimlessly here and there. When the mind wanders in this manner, our goals and aspirations, too, drift about without any clear direction or focus.
Here, we must assume the role of a monkey-tamer. We must administer specific training exercises to bring this "monkey"—our mind—under control.
Only then will our attention remain singularly focused on our goals.
To begin with, we must practice controlling the mind by utilizing our breath. That is, we must train our breathing and, in doing so, anchor the mind firmly to it.
Find a quiet space and sit upon a mat on the floor. As you sit, ensure that your spine is aligned in a perfectly straight line.
Close your eyes and observe your natural breathing for a short while. Then, slowly inhale a deep breath and slowly exhale it.
As you inhale, allow your abdomen to fill with air first, followed by your chest rising upward.
As you exhale, allow your chest to recede inward first, followed by your abdomen drawing inward.
In essence, visualize your torso—from abdomen to chest—expanding like an inflating balloon as you inhale; then, as you exhale, visualize your chest contracting first, followed by your abdomen contracting to release the air.
Throughout this process, your inhalation and exhalation should be so gentle and subtle that the sound of your breathing is audible only to you.
While maintaining this state, assign two specific tasks to your mind:
This is very important. First, direct a portion of its attention toward your spine. Second, direct the remainder of your body towards to your abdominal region. That is how you must frequently check to ensure that your spine remains perfectly straight. At the same time, just concentrate to observe whether your abdomen and chest expand as you inhale.
Next, with your eyes closed, remain in a state of stillness and simply observe your natural breathing. During this process, set aside all other thoughts and focus solely on your specific goal; breathe life into it.
If you begin by practicing this exercise to condition your body and mind, you may gradually incorporate additional breathing techniques as you progress.
By practicing this routine both in the morning and in the evening, your mind will begin to achieve a state of focused concentration.
You will master the art of meditation, and your goals will be realized.
May you live long... and prosper!
Wishing you all a great time ahead!
