How Did I Take A Flight Using Bitcoin From London Heathrow To Ibiza? - When it comes to traveling, there are a few things that everyone dreads - long queues at security, lost luggage, and quite often missed connections, dalays, emergencies... ladies and gentlemen - there's a new item on that list: spending a whole flight worrying whether your Bitcoin paymen's gone through or not... today I can also say a lot has happened so excuse me if it reads like I am flapping in the wind... no... a hurricane.

Well I very very recently decided to take a trip to Ibiza from London Heathrow, in the United Kingdom, and wanted to try something a little different. I opted to pay for my flight with Bitcoin, and found a company called CheapAir (there are others I should say) that accept the cryptocurrency as payment.
As soon as I clicked the "pay with Bitcoin" button, I felt a sense of excitement that I hadn't experienced since that time I accidentally tapped the "buy all" button on AliExpress. I found myself questioning my-own-self "is this going to be the smartest or the dumbest thing I’d done all year?"
I arrived at London Heathrow airport, feeling like a bit of a crypto-genius, and went straight to the check-in desk. As I stepped up to the counter, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and superiority. Surely the staff would be amazed by my cutting-edge crypto payment method?

Turns out it seemed like they weren't at all that clued up... anyhow the staff looked suspiciously at me as I tried to explain that Bitcoin was a legitimate form of payment. It seemed like they'd never heard of it before. Thinking quickly, I decided to use the most persuasive argument I could come up with: "Well, it’s used online to buy drugs"... Yup needless to say, this approach didn't help my cause....
It seems staff were having a giggle at my expense... "his face", one female representative said, with a laugh in her tone - mortified I was I can tell you.
After a few lines of friendly banter, I was finally allowed through security with my Bitcoin payment in hand/wallet/ledger. But as I walked towards the gate, I began to have second thoughts. "What if the transaction didn't go through and what if I was stuck in Heathrow with no way to pay for my flight?" - Yes stuck... it's for dramatic effect... Coronation of some King or something to...

To Bitcoin a story short... as I settled into my seat on the plane, my palm was sweating. Looking around the cabin, I couldn't shake the feeling that everyone was secretly paying judgment on me. "What kind of person pays for flights with Bitcoin? And why do they look so happy about it?", I imagined them thinking... I also wondered if anyone had heard me mention drugs, and whether I was up for a pat down and turn out via security... Ouch...
It was then out of the blue, something miraculous happened. The flight attendants came around with coffee and snacks (this is not the miracle), to my surprise, they didn't bat an eyelid when I asked if it was possible to pay for my refreshments with Bitcoin. "It's pretty cool", one of them even said... yes!

At that very moment my confidence was restored. Was I a man who took risks, or a man who took risks? (I do you know?)... I decided it was the latter, and started dreaming about a future where all flights were paid for in cryptocurrency. No longer would the world have to worry about exchanging currencies or getting ripped off by bank/foreign exchange fees... I felt like Dr Evil with a devious plan... The future was now, at this moment... and I was living it.
Alas it is that all good things must come to an end, and eventually, we landed in Ibiza... Not so long ago in fact *looks at laptop time, even that changed automatic* - As I walked through the airport, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief and total accomplishment. I had successfully bought a flight with Bitcoin and flown to another country... and even paid for my in-flight snacks with Bitcoin. I can definitely say with confidence not many of my friends or family could say that... the odd few friends have talked and experienced long distance travel with Crypto.
I know... 2023 and a first for me with Bitcoin... I pretty much have done everything else including: drop it, get it drunk, lose it, win it, hate it, live it, love it... just never felt like it was time to risk it on a flight in the past. I am sure you agree... a lot has changed in the last few years.

It was indeed a good day... my experience of paying for a flight to Ibiza with Bitcoin was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. From excitement to dread, from hope to despair, and ultimately to a sense of accomplishment. For anyone considering doing the same, I'd say go for it – just be prepared to experience that good old English humour.
