I sometimes use Publish0x as a blog, so I'm gonna do that once more because I need an opinion.
Here's some context, I live in a European capital (but outside of the UE), where I've been renting the same place for over two years.
Prices are going up, as they are everywhere, and so far, I was relatively happy with my apartment, but I'm now slightly annoyed and am considering moving out.
Here's what happened, and here are the pros and cons of my apartment.
What happened
I got back late last night, after a long and eventful journey, and found my apartment had been 'messed' with. The landlord did tell me he would paint the walls and fix some things while I was gone, but two things bothered me.
1, I was sort of expecting everything to be ready by the time I was back, and it wasn't, the apartment was a bit messy
2, stuff is missing
I should point out that is not like stuff is missing because it was stolen, it's just things I'd bought to clean the apartment that's gone, and there were no towels and no curtains and no bed sheets
Why it bothers me
In essence, I don't like it when people get into my apartment without me being there, no matter the circumstances. I know this is normal in some countries (maids, etc) but it's not like where I'm from. I think it's a cultural thing, I think people in some regions are more used to that.
But I digress.
The real reason it bothers me is it happened twice. Once, in April 2022 and then again, now, and both times it was the same reason, "I'm gonna paint the walls while you're gone", good. Except why is the apartment not ready by the time you know I was gonna be back?
Why I'm thinking about changing (=CONS)
I'm quite petty. I know, bad character trait, but that's not the reason. The reason is this apartment is far from the center, and I don't have a dishwasher or a washing machine. But distance is the real deal breaker.
And I don't wanna be adding issues like the one I mentioned above to that.
PROS
My rent is quite low, and I have a good relationship with the landlord, and this is one of those countries where, if you have a problem, you can sometimes fix it easily and quickly because it's one of those countries where people don't bull***t you, there's no fake politeness.
In some other countries, culturally, I'd have been obliged to hide behind a long list of "If you could" "Would you please" "Whenever is convenient for you".
Whereas here, here's how the conversation went, "Hey I got back home last night, late, I was tired, couldn't find stuff and the apartment was a mess, it's not great, where's my stuff?"
Hopefully I didn't sound too impolite but that's how people act around here, and the world keeps turning.
And apart from the things that aren't there (I could really, really use a washing machine), everything else works properly and it's never too hot or too cold.
