I just agreed to do something I swore I'd never do again.
I write for a living, and I get paid a decent salary, but getting to this point was tough. It meant writing hours and hours every day, year on year, while working another job because I wasn't getting paid to write. Or when I was, it was peanuts.
And I did that, lest we forget, with people laughing at me when I told them I wanted to become a full time writer.
But I had the last laugh, and after my writing 'career' kicked off a bit. I swore to myself I'd never write for free again except for myself. I've got a couple of blogs I try to keep alive, and they bring in zero dollars. But that's fine.
Writing on somebody's else platform for free? No way. I swore I'd alway ask for a fee, even if it's a symbolic fee.
Then yesterday I got an Instagram DM from a website that covers sports news. Specifically, sports news relating to my favourite football team.
They asked me if I wanted to write an editorial, and I said yes. I asked if there'd be money involved. And they said no.
I'm not sure why I did it. Writing the editorial took me maybe 60 minutes in total so that's not too crazy.
But still.
I'm gonna take that as a reminder to myself.
Writing is all about writing. Sometimes, some people ask for a piece of advice or help when they want to do this for a living.
And I always tell them the same thing. The most important part of writing is... writing. The subject you write about is less relevant.
If, say, you want to write about cars for a living. If you have to like cars, obviously, but love writing.
