Everything is expensive

I'm now in one of my favourite cities in the world on business.

The flight was paid for, as was the hotel, but I've snuck in an extra four days in the country to go to a different city I like, to catch up with friends, and obviously that's on me.

This means I've had to pay for my own train tickets there and back, my own hotel room for the extra nights, and every meal outside of the reason I'm here is on me also.

I'm having a pint of my favourite beer, and it's the equivalent of around $9.

The train ticket was $100+ return.

The room I got, which is actually an apartment near the river because hotels were actually more expensive, is about $500 for three nights.

I've been here about an hour, and I've already spent 9+500+100 dollars, that's 609 dollars.

Just a year ago, this would've been 10 percent cheaper.

Five years ago, this would've been 30 percent cheaper.

And it can only get worse.

Just imagine a race between your salary and inflation. For every two steps your inflation adjusted salary takes, inflation prices take five steps.

What to do? Not sure.

Several assets are inflation resistant, but salary isn't. Savings aren't. It's tricky. And I think it'll continue to accelerate.

So I just highlighted a problem for which I have no solution.

So maybe I should get another beer.
