Although Saudi Arabia recently lifted their ban on women drivers, their government has arrested dozens of female rights activists and threw them in jail. Some of them are facing the death penalty or life in prison. Some of those very women who advocated for women's right to drive have been among those jailed. Apparently in Saudi Arabia they might change their policies, but they will not tolerate normal people telling them their policies are wrong. In a move that in a reasonable world would surprise nobody, the government of Canada decided to call out this bs for the human rights abuse it is.
In response, Saudi Arabia threw a tantrum - breaking diplomatic ties, expelling the Canadian ambassador, declaring that they will not take part in any more trade deals with Canada, and finally tweeting out an image of an airliner heading towards buildings in Toronto's iconic skyline. Most of the 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is an authoritarian monarchy that is currently engaged in an imperialist war against its neighbor Yemen. They have a long history of human rights abuses, including outlawing "blasphemy" against Islam, outlawing homosexuality, executing people for "witchcraft", banning women from voting, murdering political opposition, and carrying out the death penalty for minor offenses. They have also played a key role in advancing the Islamist ideology of Wahhabism, which is a traditionalist and authoritarian interpretation of the faith that advocates for theocracy. It has inspired many violent Islamists around the world. Surely this country is a massive danger to America and human rights, so why do we continue to work with them or tolerate their bullshit (Hint: Oil)? Even Trump, who had called them out years ago, appears to have softened against them. The US has declared neutrality in this battle.
Saudi Arabia later took down this tweet and said it wasn't intended literally. But let's keep it real, the message was delivered - and it wasn't that hard to figure out.
Here is a great take-down of how the US is treating Saudi Arabia with kids' gloves. It comes from Secular Talk, a left-leaning to left-wing page that is, much like myself, often critical of SJWs and US foreign policy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=bJjugkmglRg
