Imagine me trying to take the sound experience to a higher level a few years back: wanting the best wireless option for my PlayStation for online gaming.
Reading reviews, asking friends, trying out cheaper alternatives.
The Sony PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset was the best way to spend $100 for a pure sound. Here's why.
Quality Does Matter
When I started playing videogames back in the day, I never would've thought sound would be important in any way while playing.
I can understand some people are all right with their current speakers when sitting on the couch playing FIFA or other games where sound is not key for a win – and I also don't bother putting on my headset while playing Rocket League.
But as people dive into somewhat deeper parts of video games of the 21st century, peripherals become key to the right experience.
As a monitor with a high refresh rate, a custom controller, a mechanical keyboard or a really sensitive mouse could noticeably boost your skills, so could you react to the in-game world with headphones like the Gold Wireless Headset.
I hope you don't mind I won't start detailing all the technical little parts this headphones is capable of from frequency-range and others.
Bass is bass without any noticable distortion, even when listening to music on my Macbook.
I hear footsteps in games while some teammates don't. Fortnite, COD, Siege, you name it. How?
I think the key is the over-ear form factor of the earcups, which closes out every noise and sound around you so that you can concentrate even better.
Thank God Sony had learned from their previous failures with the Gold Wireless Headset v1 and has strengthened the band and earcups – preventing them from breaking and falling apart from 1 week of use. Make sure you don't mix them up when buying one!
Features
Needless to say that all of Sony's headphones that are created for gaming are the best on the PlayStation.
Several little tweaks are available through an app on the console, but some valuable features only with their first-party games like Marvel's Spider-Man, Days Gone or The Last of Us. But in my view these are just tiny little bonuses and optimizations that add some shine to the titles mentioned before. You will not experience worse when playing other games on other consoles, thankfully.
How about connectivity? This headphone has you covered fully – almost.
Just have a console, a TV, a computer or any media device that supports USB-audio output via the little dongle that you get with the headset, and you are good to go!
Yes. You can use it even with the Nintendo Switch.
No luck setting it up with the wireless receiver, or you don't want to lose audio quality via bluetooth? No problem!
Plug the 3,5mm jack cable (which comes in the packaging) into the controller, your laptop or phone. No need for any charge in the built-in battery.
Some features are only available while using the headset in wireless mode: muting your built-in microphone, raising or lowering the volume of the headset and of course the bad brother, Virtual Surround Sound.
Virtual Surround Sound either needs some higher competence in setting up the headset correctly, or I'm just a noob who doesn't know what's good and what isn't. I personally never used this feature.
Battery is Sucked
Have you ever woke up in the morning smelling into your hot cup of coffee, looking out your window and seeing the sun's light hitting everything on the street and thought: what a beautiful day... for playing all day?
Me too.
Halfway through that sunny day your buddy on your head will start to fall asleep with some beeps in your ears.
This little guy has about 5-6 hours of playtime in his battery.
If you don't mind that, just casually plug the micro-usb cable in and you will be good to go. You can use it while charging.
Why No Pulse 3D?
I will get straight to the point if you want me to recommend spending $100 on the Gold Wireless Headset v2.
Just don't. If you want to get it, get it cheaper somewhere.
Sony has already released the new Pulse 3D Wireless Headset dedicated to be used with a PlayStation 5 (which I obviously do not have...), also at the same price, $100. It has all the nifty perks the Gold Wireless Headset has, plus some extras. Even the jack-compatibility, yay!
With a brand-new form factor and supposedly upgraded elements, the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset might be the perfect solution for players with no wireless option in their current inventory. For people who want to close themselves out from the world around and get sucked into the virtual atmosphere. High quality, low price.
Are you one of those people? Have a look around in the local shops. Maybe they have the Gold Wireless Headset. Is it on sale or at a significantly lower price than $100? Get that. At least that's what I'd say.
Thanks for stopping by!
