Neue Zürcher Zeitung - a review

I have recently stumbled upon NZZ and am very impressed by the quality of writing it can boast. Articles are not only well researched and, as far as I can tell, unbiased, but employ sophisticated grammar and elegant language - features largely absent from modern journalism. Since NZZ in English seems to be in its trial run and therefore open access, my suggestion going forward would be to avoid aggressive paywalling of content, allowing for instance each IP to access an article a day. This would make NZZ competitive in the web: the Anglosphere of today is a reader's market for innovation, with a myriad of outlets competing for attention. If NZZ is to become an opinion-creating medium with global range (as I hope it will) it might want to pursue a model where domestically sourced funds are used to prop up a relatively small, free site with high quality articles on global issues. Switzerland's commitment to freedom and, as I understand, favourable legal conditions render Swiss media well equipped to perform the vital public service of good quality journalism - it would be a shame if such opportunity were to be squandered. However NZZ chooses to proceed in the future I wish the project success and the acclaim it already deserves. I would encourage readers of this post to head over to their English site and browse some of the offered articles and then perhaps email [email protected] with any feedback and encouragement you might have. In a world where institutional media can be in all seriousness described as a fourth branch of government, at a time when information is certainly the most valuable, useful and dangerous resource, an unbiased, thorough and globally-oriented media outlet joining the fray is more than welcome - it is critical.
