Backstory
While the United Nations, UN, might sound like a good idea to many people as it could help facilitate communication between nations who otherwise wouldn't talk there is a dark side to the UN that thrust into the light on October 7th, 2023, and again today September 30th, 2024. This dark side goes beyond the common talking point that has emerged more and more in the US over the last few years that the UN wastes a ton of money. The UN agency UNRWA or the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East was now caught employing individuals who were part of designated terrorist organizations.
Not long after the unprovoked and horrific terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel was beginning to identify both supposed "journalists" who worked with major news stations like CNN and the BBC but also UNRWA locations and employees who participated in the attacks. International law protects a range of places like schools, places of worship, and medical treatment facilities until they are used for war or terrorist activity. Once that occurs the place is no longer protected and is a legitimate military target. Russia has used this reason for some of its attacks that have hit children's hospitals, grocery stores, and playgrounds in Ukraine however, they never provide evidence to back up their claims. Israel and 3rd party satellite companies have been able to provide this showing Hamas building rocket launch pits next to schools and fighters emerging armed from protected places among others.
When the pretty clear-cut evidence started coming out UNRWA scrambled and was quick to try and push back these claims however many Western Nations paused or halted funding to them. The UN tried to come to the defense of its agency but this fell on deaf ears due to the images that not only Israel released but also became publically available from some Hamas sources itself. Due to how clear-cut it was against some of these UNRWA employees the agency did end up "firing" some individuals who failed to disclose these ties. However, the agency still really has not presented a concrete explanation as to why its facilities have been used to launch missiles and why tunnels used by Hamas are located on their grounds. Instead, they have issued responses condemning Israel deflecting blame for the terrorist built and utilized infrastructure at their sites. You can't just build a tunnel complex under and around a UNRWA facility without raising some suspicion. These tunnels are complex projects that require a ton of manpower and materials that by default would raise suspicion.
Over time it seems the West forgot and many of the nations who had halted funding resumed it sadly before UNRWA took concrete and transparent action to prevent this from happening again.
Latest Twist
Yesterday, Monday, September 30, 2024 Israel carried out a strategic strike on a top Hamas commander in Lebanon killing him and his family at a refugee camp run by UNRWA. The twist isn't that he was located in a UNRWA refugee camp but rather that he was an employee of UNRWA until he was suspended in March because of alleged ties to Hamas. This guy wasn't a lowly soldier or some middle-level guy no no no he was THE HEAD OF HAMAS'S BRANCH IN LEBANON. Sure he might not have started out that high due to the strikes Israel has launched over the last year but he had to be pretty darn close to the top to get to this level as quickly as he did.
Now the head of the agency is pushing back saying well we heard he was involved in the politics not that he was a commander we never heard he was a commander... well Hamas itself said he was one soooo is the UN really that bad at hiring? The agency itself said that it had to get the intel from Israel not from the internal review that had been going on at UNRWA since the initial accusations. When defending itself the agency in my opinion made a fool of itself by saying that it acts on the intel they get when it is more than just a name. More than a name how much is it that they want and again why are they hiring people who can even be named in connection to a terrorist organization kinda seems like a pretty basic thing when someone is hired to check their background, especially with an agency like UNRWA but nope they want others it seems to do there work.
