The Cyborgs Are Coming!

The Cyborgs Are Coming!

Elon Musk and his team at Neuralink is now practically at the forefront of brain–computer interface(BCI) technology.

They have further demonstrated at their recent presentation how much they have come a long way from their previous advancements which were already ahead of anything else especially when in comes to miniaturization and portability:

The previous criticism from the neuroscience community was that they have not demonstrated any new science. What those people do not understand is that Neuralink is making existing science practical and deployable to the masses instead of being stuck in bulky machines and devices inside expensive laboratories and research institutions. They are engineering the science like no one else.

I remember when I was a kid and just recently experienced the internet as it was becoming more widely available. I can't help but be addicted to the vast amount of information available at my fingertips. I used to read the encyclopedia a lot before but that instantly became stale with the internet. Why would I read a book that was published long ago when I can just search for the most recent information about any given topic? I would stay up day and night until I couldn't -until my eyes would start to give up and I couldn't even understand what I'm reading anymore. Until my brain has practically hanged!

In one of those moments, I thought I should just be able to stick the phone cable(dial-up modem days) directly to my brain and directly read from the internet to my brain without having to read thru my eyes and type with my fingers. I thought of the current input-output(I/O) method as a bottleneck since the brain is obviously able to process faster than we can read and write/type.

Now that this scenario is closer to reality and perhaps achievable within most of our lifetimes, I'm not sure I really want it. Do we remain the same person or do we become someone and perhaps someTHING else other than a human?

Ultimately, we may not have a choice. We could end up in a world with the implant haves and have-nots. Where the sky is the limit for those with implants in terms of opportunities and scraps for those without.

In the movie Gattaca it was eugenics thru genetic selection that designated people as those who are capable of achieving high and those who are most likely not. With BCI implants, it would be demonstrably clear that those with implants are significantly better than those without. This would probably be true even for physical tasks as the implants would allow you to regulate your body better overtime than those without.

So I don't know. I guess we'll just cross the bridge when we get there.
