Today I received a promotional email from an online gambling and betting platform. In the mail they offered me a few free games in the slots of the platform in exchange for providing my data and confirming it by means of an image of my current personal identity document in my country.
This has made me reflect to what extent we come to value our privacy and our personal data.
It is curious to think that your personal data has a temporary lifetime value while what you receive is a very small time value in comparison. In this case, your free games will last one hour while your data "belongs" to them for life.
In economic value I think obviously the same thing happens. Although in the gift games you are very lucky and obtain a profit seemingly out of nowhere, it could not be compared with the benefit that personal data can generate.
And it is that deep down I believe that the custom of providing our personal data in a detached way when forming part of a social network or a content page has been normalized, so if an economic incentive is offered (sometimes with a lot of small print) can give us the feeling that we are the beneficiaries.
