Democratic elections are the fruit of thousands of years of evolution of society. Currently, the most common ruling system across the world is not free of problems that can be solved.
Blockchain technology, with its decentralized nature, transparency, and security features, offers a potential solution to these problems.
In today's article, I will try to point out the potential pros and cons of blockchain-based democratic elections.
What is blockchain technology?
Blockchain technology is a decentralized digital ledger. Each block in the chain contains a unique cryptographic hash that links it to the previous block, as well as a timestamp.
This creates an unchangeable record of all transactions. The biggest advantage of blockchain is its decentralized nature, it utilizes a technology that allows it not to be managed by a central power. Instead, it works on a network of nodes, each of which maintains a copy of the ledger thus increasing the safety and independence of the net.
Potential advantages of blockchain technology in elections:
Transparency
The most important advantage of blockchain technology is its transparency. In a blockchain-based voting system, all transactions could be recorded and stored in a public ledger that anyone can access, this means that voters can verify that their vote was cast and counted correctly and that candidates can verify election results.
Security
Hacking and other forms of fraud can impair the legitimacy of the results. Blockchain technology offers a high level of security because it uses encryption and a distributed network to prevent unauthorized access or changes to data, this makes it much more difficult for hackers or bad actors to manipulate election results.
Accessibility
Blockchain-based voting systems can make it easier to access voters, especially for those who are physically unable to visit a polling place. The usage of blockchain technology can allow people to vote online, which can increase voter frequency.
Challenges of blockchain technology in elections:
Complexity
Blockchain technology is complex and can be difficult to understand for non-technical users. To make it more accessible to voters, there is a need to develop user-friendly interfaces that are easy to use and understand.
Privacy
The transparency of blockchain technology means that all transactions are visible on the public ledger. While this is a benefit for transparency, it's a challenge to privacy. Voters may be unwilling to cast their vote if they are afraid that their vote may be visible to others.
Costs
Blockchain technology isn't free, and implementing a blockchain-based voting system can be expensive. Election authorities must invest in the necessary infrastructure, such as nodes, to maintain the network.
Security risks
Although blockchain technology offers a high level of security, it's not invincible. Malicious actors could attempt to hack the system, and while this is difficult, it's not impossible.
Legal and regulatory framework
Implementing a blockchain-based voting system would require the development of a regulatory framework to make it compliant with current laws.
My thoughts
Blockchain technology usage in elections has huge advantages over the current voting system. While it offers huge benefits to voters, it may generate problems for the government. Infrastructure that would need to be deployed in order for such a system to work is time and money-consuming.
While many modern counties may explore the idea, it is highly unlikely that most of them will implement this solution.
