Many of you might have heard about MEV bots, and if you're wondering how so many crypto wallets are filled with funds, MEV bots are one of the reasons behind it.
What exactly are MEV bots ?
MEV stands for "Miner Extractable Value" which refers to the potential profit that miners can extract from the order of transactions within a block on the blockchain.
MEV bots work by monitoring the mempool, which is a temporary storage area where pending transactions wait to be confirmed by miners. These bots are constantly scanning for high-value transactions that can be manipulated to their advantage. Once a profitable transaction is identified, the MEV bot swiftly intervenes by submitting a new transaction that either executes before the original transaction or includes a set of instructions that modify the outcome in its favor.
How they gain ?
Front-running:- when the bot sees someone trying to buy a token at a certain price, it quickly sends its own transaction with a slightly higher fee. This ensures that the bot's transaction is completed first, allowing it to buy the token at a lower price. Then, after the user buys the token again its price increases and then the bot can sell it right away at a higher price, making a profit from the price difference.
How it can be prevented ?
Preventing MEV entirely is a complex challenge, but there are ongoing efforts to mitigate its negative impact. Here are a few approaches that are being explored:
-
Transparency and Fairness Enhancements: Projects and protocols are working on implementing mechanisms to increase transparency and fairness within blockchain transactions. This includes promoting open access to transaction data and improving the visibility of transaction execution to reduce the advantage of MEV bots.
-
MEV Auctions: Some proposals suggest introducing MEV auctions, where miners bid for the right to include certain transactions in a block. This approach aims to redistribute the value extracted by miners and provide a more equitable system.
-
Protocol-Level Solutions: Development teams are actively working on protocol-level solutions to address MEV. These solutions aim to introduce mechanisms that discourage or mitigate the profitability of MEV strategies, reducing the incentive for MEV bot activity.
-
Flashbots and MEV-Geth: Initiatives like Flashbots and MEV-Geth aim to create alternative transaction relay systems that allow users to privately submit their transactions directly to miners. This helps reduce the visibility of pending transactions and minimizes the opportunity for front-running by MEV bots.
-
Research and Collaboration: The crypto community is actively researching and collaborating to better understand MEV and find effective solutions. This includes academic studies, industry collaborations, and open-source initiatives to foster innovation and develop more robust anti-MEV measures.
Hey it's not the end, there are many thing to say about MEV, but this was a brief on how MEV bots effect the market. You can find the statistics of MEV bots gains here.
