My mum called me yesterday.
She saw USDT on my phone and said,"Inkcognito, what is this new recharge card?"
I laughed.
I told her,"Mummy, it's not recharge card. It's dollar that lives inside phone".
She said,"Dollar inside phone? How?"
So I explained it to her like this.
*What is USDT?*
You know how 1 dollar is 1 dollar. It does not go up and down like Bitcoin.
USDT is that same 1 dollar. But it lives on the internet.
1 USDT=1 US dollar. Always.
That is why they call it Stablecoin. It is stable. It does not shake.
*Why I told my mum we need it in Lagos*
I told her"Mummy, you know how naira goes up and down. Today you have 10k, tomorrow it cannot buy the same yam".
She said,"Yes o."
I said "if you change some of your naira to USDT, it will stay like dollar. It will not lose value quickly. It stays inside your phone. No stress".
She paid more attention.
I said again,"And if you want to send money to your sister in London, you can send USDT. It will reach in minutes, not 3 days."
She shouted,"Ah! Really?"
Yes, mummy. Really.
*Is it safe?*
USDT is not Bitcoin. Bitcoin can be $60k today, $50k tomorrow.
USDT is always trying to stay $1. It is for saving, not for gambling.
Of course, you still keep it in a safe wallet. Not anywhere.
But for people like us in Lagos,it is like having a small dollar account inside your phone without opening domiciliary account.
My mum finally understood.
Have you ever tried to explain crypto to your parents?
How did they react?
