"American FinServ multinational corporation Visa recently released a proposal outlining how Ethereum users could set up automatic payments directly from their own, self-custodial wallets. It will be eliminating banks and other centralized entities from the equation."

Hmmm. Kind of what we've wished for since probably "the beginning of Bitcoin era".
I have many times mentioned on my blog that when we will be able to link DeFi and noncustodial crypto ownership tools to real-life payment systems is when we should expect the true mass adoption to kick in. For as long as we need to wire a bank account to an exchange in order to swap between currencies(crypto and fiat) or to use crypto as payment through money services such as VISA we're not there yet...
The whole point of crypto is to take away third parties, whether it is banks, custodial services, social media, games, etc... Only then we will be at the point of regaining sovereignty and ownership of what we call money and wealth.
Visa getting into such integration does not necessarily mean "we are there" already because VISA is still a payments system of the establishment. However, such breakthrough development will incentivize developments in the "decentralized side of crypto". I don't remember the name, but I sure know someone from Hive paid for beer using HIVE through the V4APP using the lightning network a few days ago... at a bar that accepts sats as payments of course.
Hive is already there(where VISA is dragging ETH) in this regard. The foundations of Hive are well crafted and all we need now is more integrations into the payment system of the future. By no means do I say that the fiat system is over or on the brink of collapsing, although I really wished that was the case.
But we are at a point where colossal companies are starting to integrate blockchain technology into the daily lives of billions of people around the world. I have a bunch of crypto-to-fiat VISA cards, thus this news regarding VISA is not much of a blast for me, but what we're seeing here is integration of noncustodial wallets by VISA.
In comparison, when I pay using my Binance card or my crypto.com one, my usage history is for sure stored somewhere on a server, but if and when we will be having VISA cards with no KYC linked to noncustodial wallets is when the true fight will begin.
It is easy to get lost in the haze of the crypto world when CT is all you do all day, but crypto is not just about prices and dollar valuation, most of us know that and that's what we should focus upon more, in bringing it into our day to day life and middle finger the establishment.
Remember Arthur Hayek? We're getting sly as he predicted a few decades ago...
Thanks for your attention,
