I wanted to start this article with a profound or poignant quote, but nothing came to mind that could sum up my Crypto journey thus far because of a magic word I learned to embrace — Volatility, and this volatility is extremely addictive once you're in it's grasp...
It's been a long and arduous journey, to say the least, but with moments of exhilaration and excitement that keep me riding the (good AND bad) wave of what I hope is the future.
I was there just before and during the property boom, I was there just before and during the Internet boom, I was there just before and during the Web2 boom—but that's it, I was just there, watching.
When I was first made aware of cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin in particular, can you believe I was still just watching from the sidelines? I initially did not grasp the concept. It seemed like a fleeting trend, a digital tulip mania that would fizzle out once the novelty wore off. But as time passed, the resilience of Bitcoin and the fervor of its community began to intrigue me.
My turning point came in late 2017 during the historic Bitcoin bull run. Suddenly, crypto was on every news channel, every social media platform, and every conversation at tech meetups. Friends who had previously scoffed at Bitcoin were now boasting about their returns. The fear of missing out hit me hard, and I finally decided to dip my toes into the crypto waters.
I remember my first purchase vividly. With sweaty palms and a racing heart, I transferred a modest sum into an exchange account and bought my first fraction of a Bitcoin. Watching the numbers fluctuate in real-time was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. That was my baptism into the world of crypto volatility.
From there, my journey became a rollercoaster of highs and lows. I devoured whitepapers, joined crypto forums, and subscribed to countless newsletters. I rode the wave of initial coin offerings (ICOs), experiencing both the thrill of quick gains and the sting of spectacular losses. I learned about the importance of securing my assets, the nuances of different blockchains, and the ever-present threat of scams and hacks.
One of my most memorable moments was during the 2020 DeFi (Decentralized Finance) boom. It felt like a second chance to be part of something groundbreaking from the beginning. I dabbled in yield farming, liquidity mining, and even experimented with some meme coins. The sheer creativity and innovation within the DeFi space reignited my passion for crypto and reminded me why I had joined this revolution in the first place.
But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. The bear markets tested my resolve, and I questioned my decisions more than once. The 2018 crash was particularly brutal, wiping out a significant portion of my portfolio. I watched in despair as the value of my holdings plummeted, but I refused to give in to panic. Instead, I used that time to educate myself further and strengthen my belief in the long-term potential of blockchain technology.
As we enter 2024, I find myself more committed than ever. The landscape has evolved dramatically, with mainstream adoption inching closer every day. Institutions are now part of the crypto conversation, and regulatory frameworks are taking shape. I no longer feel like a mere spectator; I am an active participant in this digital renaissance.
Looking back, I realise that embracing volatility was key to surviving and thriving in the crypto world. It taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of staying informed. More than anything, it reminded me that innovation often comes with uncertainty and that the future belongs to those willing to take risks and adapt.
So, as I write this, I started by saying volatility is extremely addictive for me, it's like a drug addiction, where I think about it all the time, with my moods riding a crazy wave depending on whether I got my fix or not, however now I’m not just reflecting on my journey, as I have learned some important lessons, yet at the same time, occasionally make the same mistakes, but I am looking forward to what lies ahead. The crypto landscape will continue to evolve, and new opportunities will arise. And this time, I won’t just be there—I’ll be ready to seize them....
