HOW TO SETUP RX 480 8GB FOR MINING

In this post I will describe how to setup an RX480 8GB (Samsung Memory) to mine cryptocurrency. I will be using PhoenixMiner and Ethermine as an example but there are several different algorithms and mining softwares out there. Do your research on each coin you wish to mine.

 SOFTWARE NEEDED

STEP ONE

The first step is to install your RX480 drivers. Radeon will want to automatically update to the latest drivers but sometimes there are bugs with new software so I personally use driver version 20.11.2 because it has been very stable. You can find that HERE. Once your new driver is installed go into the Radeon software and disable updates. It should appear on the front page the first time you open the application.

STEP TWO

The next step is to create a backup of the GPU bios. You'll need to download ATI FLASH in order to do this. You can find that HERE. Open the program but right clicking and running "as administrator". In the program select your gpu and then click on "Save". Create a filename that will let you determine which card's bios you are saving (If you are setting up multiple gpus) although I recommend doing this with one card in your system at a time. I use the current vbios name as the filename. For example: 113-48085ssf2-w90bios.rom

STEP THREE

Once you have your stock bios saved, open up the Polaris Bios Editor application, which can be found HERE. In the top left, click on "Open Bios" and load the previously saved .rom file. There is now a fancy function called "One Click Timing Patch" which will automatically determine the strap values for your gpu. Go ahead and click on that. Once it updates the bios, click on "Save As" and create a save file so you know that this will be the modded bios. For example: MODDED113-48085ssf2-w90bios.rom. Once that is saved, open up ATI FLASH again as administrator. Click on "Load Image" this time and select the modded bios file you just created, then click on "Program". Once your programing is complete, run the AMD Pixel Clock Patch found HERE. If there are "Found" variables, click yes to patch. Once that is complete, restart your computer. If you restart your computer and the driver is acting funny, open the pixel patcher application again and if it still has found variables, patch and restart again. If it says "Already Patched" simply restart your computer one more time.

STEP FOUR

Open up your AMD radeon software application and switch your GPU mode to compute. You can do this by clicking the gear in the top right. Head to the "Graphics" tab and scroll down until you see the "Advanced" section. Scroll down some more and under "GPU WORKLOAD" switch it from Graphics to Compute and restart the application.

STEP FIVE

Install MSI Afterburner if you havent already and open the application. Depending on which version you download the GUI can look a little different but you should be able to find the correct settings. Find the gear icon and click on it. Scroll down in the settings and tick the "Unlock Voltage Control" box. You may need to restart the app after. Next you will want to set your "Core Clock" to 1150 and your "Memory Clock" to 2000. If you have a slider for Voltage (mV), set it to -100. If you have a "Curve Editor", open that and -100 to P-STATE 3 through P-STATE 7. Set your fans speeds or temp to what you are comfortable with and save your configuration.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your RX 480 8GB is now ready to start mining. If you are setting up multiple cards then remove the current modded card and install the next one. Run Display Driver Uninstaller, uninstall the AMD drivers and start over from step one. You may have to redo your AFTERURNER and RADEON settings once all the cards are flashed and plugged in, if thats the case, repeat steps FOUR and FIVE. Now I will help you setup a miner and today we are using PhoenixMiner 5.5c.

PHOENIXMINER SETUP

Head on over to the Phoenix Miner Github and download the Windows 10 rar. Once that is downloaded extract the .rar to a folder of your choosing or to the desktop. Inside the folder we will need to create a .bat file that will run the mining software. You will need an ETHEREUM address and a POOL to use. Depending on your location, your pool address and port may be different from the one I use so make sure to read each pool's how to guide carefully. For this test we are going to use ethermine.org and a Coinbase ETH address. To create a .bat file, simply create a new .txt file in the folder, open it up and input the following:

setx GPU_FORCE_64BIT_PTR 0
setx GPU_MAX_HEAP_SIZE 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_SINGLE_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
PhoenixMiner.exe -pool POOL_ADDRESS:PORT -wal YOUR_ETH_WALLET.WORKERNAME -rxboost 30

The "POOL_ADDRESS:PORT" portion of this will depend on your location and the pool you wish to use. The "YOUR_ETH_WALLET.WORKERNAME" part of this file should be your ETH address and a worker name. Input anything for the worker name part. Below is my basic .bat file:

setx GPU_FORCE_64BIT_PTR 0
setx GPU_MAX_HEAP_SIZE 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_SINGLE_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
PhoenixMiner.exe -pool ssl://us1.ethermine.org:5555 -wal 0x6F3b3644b6CaA37563f2f1156007f0104afC97E4.pub1 -rxboost 30

Save as ETHERMINERX480.bat or whatever name you wish. Make sure the file ends with .bat though. Once the file is saved simply right click the .bat file and "Run As Administrator".

YOU ARE NOW MINING

You did it! You are now mining a cryptocurrency! The miner may take a few minutes to calibrate itself but you should be getting roughly 30 mhs per RX480 8GB with Samsung memory. All cards are different and each card's memory manufacturer makes a difference in hash rate. To see what your GPU's memory is, use GPU-Z found HERE. Thanks for reading and I hope you found this informative.

DISCLAIMER

DO AT YOUR OWN RISK! Altering your graphics card bios and software always runs the risk of bricking a card or your system if done incorrectly. Please do as much research as you can and be cautious.
