The World Cup is supposed to be a celebration.
Packed stadiums, global audiences, national pride and unforgettable moments. Yet as the tournament opens in Mexico, another story continues to unfold far from the spotlight.
Thousands of families are still searching for missing sons, daughters, brothers and sisters.
For years, groups known as βsearching mothersβ have become one of the most powerful symbols of Mexico's ongoing disappearance crisis. Carrying photographs of loved ones, these women organize marches, demand investigations and, in some cases, conduct searches themselves.
Their message is simple: don't forget us.
The contrast is striking. On one side, billions of dollars invested in infrastructure, tourism and international promotion. On the other, families who say they still lack answers about what happened to their loved ones.
According to human rights organizations and international media, more than 130,000 people are officially listed as missing in Mexico. The reasons vary and each case is unique, but organized crime, trafficking networks and institutional weaknesses are often cited as contributing factors.
As media attention turns toward football, activists are using the World Cup's visibility to raise awareness internationally.
Many protests are not directed against the sport itself. Instead, they ask a difficult question: can a nation celebrate while so many families continue living with uncertainty?
This debate extends beyond Mexico.
Around the world, major sporting events often take place while wars, humanitarian crises and political tensions continue elsewhere. Critics argue that global entertainment sometimes overshadows deeper issues. Others respond that sport can unite people and even create opportunities for difficult conversations.
There is no simple answer.
What is clear is that public attitudes appear to be changing. Social media has made it harder for major events to exist in isolation from broader social realities. Fans increasingly expect transparency and accountability from institutions, governments and international organizations.
The World Cup will undoubtedly create unforgettable football moments.
But for many Mexican families, the tournament is also an opportunity to remind the world that thousands of stories remain unfinished.
Long after the final whistle, those questions will still remain.
And perhaps that is why their voices continue to resonate far beyond the stadiums.
What do you think? Can global sporting events help bring attention to social issues, or do they risk pushing them out of sight?
