Serie A’s Early Race Is Taking Shape: Inter and Lazio Lead, Milan Keeps Coming

Inter and Lazio share the Serie A lead on 22 points, Milan catch Roma, and Como keep impressing.

Eight rounds into the 2026–27 Serie A season, the table is beginning to tell an interesting story without offering anything close to a final verdict. Inter and Lazio share first place on 22 points, Roma and Milan are level on 18, and Como have climbed to fifth with 17. The gap between the leading pair and the chasing group is still small enough for a single weekend to change the picture.
Matchday eight also delivered 34 goals across ten games. Inter turned a difficult afternoon against Fiorentina into a dramatic late win, Lazio maintained their excellent start, Milan finished the round with three points in Udine, and Como continued to collect results that are becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss as a short-lived run of form.
Elsewhere, Atalanta and Frosinone produced an extraordinary 4–4 draw, Napoli and Roma shared six goals, and Juventus returned from Lecce with a 2–0 victory. There was plenty of entertainment, but the weekend also exposed familiar problems: teams struggling to protect leads, defences losing control under pressure, and clubs near the bottom running short of time to turn their seasons around.

Inter keep finding a way

Inter’s 2–1 win over Fiorentina was the kind of result that can strengthen a team’s belief. It was also a reminder that the Nerazzurri are making life harder for themselves than they need to.
Fiorentina moved ahead through Álex Jiménez in the 65th minute and appeared to have put the home side in serious trouble. Inter refused to let the match go, however. Marcus Thuram equalised in stoppage time, and Piotr Zieliński converted a penalty moments later to complete the turnaround.
The timing made the victory feel bigger than three points. Inter have repeatedly shown that they can respond when a game begins to slip away, and their bench has helped them maintain pressure late on. Yet there is a difference between having the character to rescue matches and consistently controlling them. Against stronger opponents, a habit of falling behind could eventually become expensive.
Inter now have 22 points, with 23 goals scored and 10 conceded. Their goal difference of plus 13 keeps them ahead of Lazio, who have the same number of points but a plus-11 difference.

Lazio are matching the leaders step for step

Lazio’s 2–1 victory over Parma was less dramatic than Inter’s comeback, but its value to the table was just as significant. Kenneth Taylor opened the scoring in the 50th minute, and an own goal by Diego Carlos eight minutes later gave Lazio a cushion. Parma found a late goal through Simone Lontani, but there was not enough time to change the outcome.
The most striking part of Lazio’s start is not simply the points total. They have conceded only five goals in eight league matches, the best defensive record among the leading teams. That kind of consistency can keep a club near the top even when performances are not spectacular every week.
There is still a long season ahead, and defensive numbers can change quickly. For now, though, Lazio have earned their place alongside Inter rather than merely benefiting from someone else’s slip.

Milan catch Roma, but the two sides arrive there differently

Napoli and Roma played out a 3–3 draw in one of the weekend’s most entertaining matches. Frank Anguissa gave Napoli the lead, and Scott McTominay scored twice, including a second goal in the closing stages. Roma kept coming back: Matías Soulé reduced the deficit before Leonardo Balerdi scored twice to bring the visitors level at 3–3.
For Roma, the point preserves an unbeaten league record after eight matches. The attacking response deserves credit, but conceding three goals after spending long periods in a strong position is a warning. A side hoping to challenge near the top needs to manage the difficult phases of a match as well as it creates chances.
Milan took a different route to the same points total. Their 2–0 away win against Udinese was built on an early goal from Christian Pulisic and a second-half finish by Omari Hutchinson. The clean sheet was particularly useful: Milan did not need a late rescue, and the team was able to close out the game with a two-goal margin.
The result moves Milan to 18 points, level with Roma. Inter and Lazio remain four points ahead, but the chasing pair are close enough to keep the pressure on. There is no reason to treat the current positions as fixed, especially with several rounds still to come before the season reaches its midpoint.

Como are building something more substantial than a surprise

Como’s 2–0 win over Sassuolo came through two goals from Anastasios Douvikas, who struck in the 49th and 60th minutes. After a goalless first half, Como found the space and precision they needed to turn the match in their favour.
Their league position is increasingly impressive: fifth place, 17 points, five wins, two draws and only one defeat. The table alone does not tell us where Como will finish, but it does show that their early-season form has been sustained over eight matches.
The challenge now is to maintain that level while managing the demands of a season that also includes European football. Depth, recovery and the ability to win games when the performance is not perfect will matter as much as the results already collected.
For the moment, Como are not simply making up the numbers. They are close to the established group at the top and have given themselves a genuine opportunity to remain part of that conversation.

Eight goals in Bergamo, and no easy conclusions

Atalanta’s 4–4 draw with Frosinone was the weekend’s most chaotic contest. Romano Schmid scored in the opening minute and added another in the 17th. Atalanta answered through Nikola Krstović, who scored twice, and goals from Éderson and Elif Elmas. Frosinone also found the net through Giacomo Calò and Aleksa Terzić, whose goal in the 82nd minute completed the draw.
The match offered a spectacular attacking display, but both teams will look at the defensive side of the performance with concern. Atalanta scored four times and still failed to win; Frosinone showed resilience and attacking quality but also allowed the opposition too many opportunities.
Frosinone remain sixth on 14 points, while Atalanta sit 11th with 10. The draw is entertaining in retrospect, but it leaves both clubs with work to do. Atalanta need greater control when defending a lead, and Frosinone must find a way to turn lively performances into more reliable results.

Juventus take a useful step forward

Juventus beat Lecce 2–0 away from home, with Weston McKennie opening the scoring in the 29th minute and Douglas Luiz adding a second before half-time. The clean sheet gave the visitors a more comfortable afternoon than they have enjoyed in some recent fixtures.
One win cannot erase a difficult stretch, but it can provide a platform. Juventus need to build on this performance by showing that they can repeat the same discipline and efficiency in the matches ahead. At this stage, the most important thing is not to overstate the result; it is to make it the beginning of a more stable run.
The victory takes Juventus to 14 points, level with Frosinone. Lecce remain on nine and will need to recover quickly if they want to avoid drifting into a more uncomfortable part of the table.

Torino, Bologna and Genoa collect valuable points

Torino opened the round with a 3–2 victory over Monza. Kian Fitz-Jim scored first, Gustavo Varela brought Monza level, and Rafik Belghali and Nikola Vlašić put Torino in front. An own goal from Nathan Patterson in stoppage time made the finish tense, but Torino held on.
The result leaves Torino eighth on 13 points. Their position is encouraging, although the narrow scoreline shows why games must be managed until the final whistle.
Bologna won 2–0 away at Cagliari through Nicolò Casale and a penalty from Federico Bernardeschi. It was a disciplined away performance and a result that keeps Bologna moving in the right direction. Cagliari, meanwhile, missed an opportunity to stay closer to the top half.
Genoa claimed a narrow 1–0 home win over Venezia, with Mikael Ellertsson scoring in the 25th minute. It was not a high-scoring contest, but the points were important for a side looking for consistency. Venezia remain bottom on three points after seven defeats in eight matches, leaving them with an urgent need to change the direction of their season.

What comes next?

The next round is scheduled for midweek, from 27 to 29 October. The short turnaround will test the depth of the squads, particularly for teams balancing domestic and European commitments. It may also create an opportunity for clubs currently just outside the leading group to close the gap.
At the top, Inter and Lazio have earned their shared lead, but neither has created a decisive advantage. Roma and Milan remain close enough to apply pressure, and Como are positioned to make the race more complicated than many expected. Further down, Juventus will want to turn their win into a run of results, while Atalanta and Napoli must address different weaknesses exposed by the weekend.
After eight rounds, the most useful conclusion is also the simplest: the table is taking shape, but it is not settled. Inter and Lazio are setting the pace, Milan have found a route back into the chase, Como continue to exceed expectations, and several teams still have enough time to change the story of their season.
