THE LEGO MOVIE 2 VIDEOGAME

It may not seem, but it has been around five years since the release of the first Lego Movie. This is a truly awe-inspiring time, especially from the perspective of the Lego brand, which delivers new game and movie titles with great popularity.

I perceive Lego games mostly positively. Although they offer maximum ease of gameplay, it is proven over the years and still works smoothly.

Of course, the change may never be bad, but I think Lego games have got used to the same style anyway, so they know exactly what to expect from the next game. This basic gaming aspect usually complements some solid story, which builds on very precisely targeted humor. Whether spoken or visual. It may be cheap at times, but the authors only cleverly use what they have at their disposal - a wide universe of heroes. All of these little parts make Lego games something very lagging but still interesting enough to keep a fan base. So I expected something similar from Lego Movie 2, but as you probably guess, the reality is somewhere else.

The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame Battle Royale?

After the start of the game, I subsequently found what it was about the film from publicly available sources. Although I cannot unambiguously evaluate the originality of the story, it is clear only from the trailer for the film that the authors of the game were inspired by film processing only to a certain extent. Certain story parts have a different game, which some may regard as positive, others exactly the opposite. However, in my opinion, full copying of a template may not be the happiest decision. Even with a slightly different story, players can watch a movie while playing a game without feeling that they are actually watching the same thing twice. Two adventures are so welcome. But let's move on and focus on the game itself.

The creators are not afraid of anything and immediately let you into action without any long sauces. You take on the character of the hero, and the first steps, of course, lead to the introduction of game elements that will carry you along the entire length of the game. These are very different at least from the latest Lego games - forget the constant running of several characters in one shot, which you can switch freely. In Lego Movie 2, the creators have a deeper grasp of the inventory where you'll find everything you need during the game. So if the moment comes when you have to act as Batman, you jump into inventory, find the character item, and pick Batman. This way of manipulating the figure is quite cumbersome compared to simple switching. Fortunately, there are not so many moments at which you need to change your character, so you always have time to breathe.

The game also offers a quick choice, but it is exclusively designed for weapons, or tools that you absolutely need to fight, move or navigate in space. Right from the start, however, it introduces you to another change that greatly disrupts its fluidity. Since this is a game based on the kit, you get a tool to build various objects and objects. This way you have to help not only yourself but also other characters. I immediately remembered the Lego Worlds, where you collect the object's plans and build. Regularly you will have to build a trampoline or power generator, with which you can move mechanical structures. Several times you will have to reach for a plant irrigation device that will make a path or get a valuable item. For the characters in the game, you are already building larger buildings, with which you will be pleased to allow you to proceed and at the same time reward you with a valuable Lego dice.

The story of the game is divided into several worlds. The main one extends on seven planets, but sometimes you can turn to the side. There are nine of them and offer mainly optional tasks. The most valuable things you can get in the game are the special Lego cubes mentioned. Usually there are dozens of them on each planet, but at the same time there is a certain number that you need to collect in order to leave the world and go on. You can see where the cubes are on the map, so there's no problem finding them. As I mentioned above, you also get them to accomplish tasks, both minor and major. What irritated me after the first two completed planets was the constant repetition of the same activities. I understand that this ailment is also commonly present in Lego games, but at least they try to hide it. Either by often forming a story, or - especially - by switching groups of heroes, each of which is specific. In Lego Movie 2, the situation is different, and from the beginning to the end you do the same thing.

So you're doing the job, going from NPC to NPC, building a 50th trampoline and a 30th power generator. Sometimes you wander around to a supporting character, but he hangs another task on your neck, a twentieth variation of what you've done repeatedly before. In short, you are spinning in one circle with the changing environment that maximizes the different approach to how the world works. The mood and type of characters are changing, and sometimes your movement, but building an x-irrigator is a must. Once in a while there is a new weapon, a new ability, with which the gameplay at least partially revives. You can demolish special stone, weld or paint faded objects. An ejection hook also appears towards the end. I don't know why he didn't come earlier. In principle, even such a large scale of tasks would not be bad if it were reasonably varied. Design level from this perspective is not the happiest.

The game also suffers from a very short game time. In Lego games, I used to go through the story in ten hours at the earliest. In Lego Movie 2, however, I was surprised when the final subtitles appeared on the screen in six to seven hours of pure time. I didn't even manage to adapt and get used to the new environment and it was over. Probably because of my imagination, I hadn't had such contradictory feelings in the game for some time. I was expecting fun for about a dozen hours, but I got a very repetitive gameplay, with an average story and about half the game time. Certainly I would prefer the authors to prepare a few more hours of fun and be able to use the potential of some weapons much more. As far as the visual side is concerned, it is standard on a good level, but the considerable presence of tearing in the Xbox One version unnecessarily interfered with the smooth experience of the game.

The Lego Movie 2 Videogame contains several major changes compared to classic Lego games, but I do not perceive them as positive. Although the construction of objects is trying to be something bigger, more meaningful, it is rather a superficial activity to fill the game time. The next step in the game is carried on this ills and repetitive. The game would also land a much larger portion of humor and at least a little longer the length of the main story. But what pleases are different worlds with different atmosphere and diverse home enemies. Fortunately, there was also cooperation, which also keeps the value of continuing just above average.
