Finding themselves without the Internet today is not only very uncomfortable, but it can also cause extensive financial and other damage. This week, a major blackout of the world network affected a relatively large area of ​​several Eastern European countries, Iran and Turkey. The incident occurred on Thursday and lasted approximately two hours. The reason is, according to the current investigation, the interruption of several optical cables at the same time.

Bulgaria, Turkey and Iran were the hardest hit and how this could have happened is the subject of extensive investigation. Sadjad Bonabi, director of the Iranian Communications Infrastructure Society, said he said the backbone line between Iran and the Romanian capital Bucharest was interrupted, as well as the second line to Munich. Within two hours, the data streams were redirected to reestablish the connection.

What is special about this case is the fact that two fiber optic cables have been broken at the same time. How this could have happened and whether this was the intention is still being sought. This is not the first time a critical Internet connection has been interrupted. In 2011, a 75-year-old woman paralyzed Georgia and Armenia, who managed to discover the local backbone and tear the wire out of it with the aim of selling it to waste collection facilities. In 2018, almost all Orkney archipelago was discontinued during construction work. However, due to the interruption of two cables at the same time, Thursday's incident does not look like an accident.
