Reluctant Heroes

Reluctant Heroes

In the field, young men stood in line,
Each struggled to turn his mind,
Away from secure home life;
Comradeship is keeping spirits alive.

The war has just started,
From loved ones, they were parted.
Tears were shed freely at the station ---
They’ll soon report for action.

The railway carriages pulled away
Before another ‘bye’ they could say.
Restless bodies refused to be stilled,
This time next year, they might be killed.

Though proud to defend the nation,
It’s only wise to be patient,
While flying high the country’s flag,
Pray to safely make their way back.
