Even though the CEO of ChatGPT (OpenAI) had previously expressed opposition to implementing ads, and at one point stated it would be a last resort, he has now backtracked with the news that the 100% free plan may be coming to an end, with the likely implementation of ads becoming increasingly imminent. This is a very complicated scenario for OpenAI because it has invested large sums ($1.4 trillion) in artificial intelligence infrastructure, but continues to operate at a loss, leading it to seek other alternatives to monetize its user base.

But what do ChatGPT ads have to do with its stock investments? It's simple: among the major technology companies in the market, the vast majority have investments linked to Artificial Intelligence companies indirectly, such as NVIDIA selling processing boards, or directly, such as Google with its Gemini AI. Come and discover more about the arrival of ads on ChatGPT and whether there will be any impact on OpenAI's revenue.

In January, open ai already implemented a The initial plan, called GO, included some additional features, and now they're going to start testing ads with users in the United States on both the FREE and GO versions. I don't know if this reminds you of another company with red and black colors that did something similar, showing ads even in the paid versions, and then everyone else implemented it.

According to the company, responses will not be affected and ads will be flagged, but will the end user be informed of this, or will they need to find this information on their own? Will users trust the responses? Predictions are one thing, reality is something completely different. One detail is that the ads will be personalized to fit the conversation topic, past chats, and previous interactions with ads—in other words, once again, a free service where YOU are the product! (Even if you pay)

This move by ChatGPT is certainly being closely watched by all other companies, because just as Netflix is to streaming companies in terms of innovation, OpenAI is to its competitors. In other words, if the idea of ads and simple plans works, it's very likely that other companies with AI chats will also start considering implementing ads to improve their revenue.

The relevant question for investors in companies in similar areas is whether this strategy will be relevant to revenues, because spending/investment in infrastructure is massive and at some point investors will want a return on their invested capital. Interestingly, according to an April 2025 chart projecting OpenAI's expected revenue for the coming years, advertising revenue doesn't appear as a significant portion. The majority of revenue will come from premium subscriptions, API access (integrating AI with other platforms), and finally, Agents capable of automating tasks.

Among these revenue streams, one is missing: the small orange slice called "New Products." This separate slice would include monetization of free users via ads, but also several other revenue areas such as memory, app stores, and voice interfaces. This leads us to wonder: if the projected revenue from this type of resource is so low compared to other revenue streams, why implement it if there might be public rejection, leading them to seek open-source AI or another company? The answer is testing and diversification. It's clear they will carefully analyze the results of this implementation; if it's relevant to the company, you'll likely start seeing ads soon.
