Mob Psycho 100 review
Although I'm very aware of how emotional I can get, how I've ended up crying a bit in like 4 different was very surprising to me. Because I thought Mob Pyscho 100 would be something in the nonsense comedy genre, I couldn't see how this was such an incredible anime that would blow my mind. It does have some comedy though, it's just not its main focus. Very mild spoilers ahead!
The story follows Mob, a shut-in middle school student who possesses incredible supernatural power. He is "training" under his master, a shady, powerless, self-proclaimed medium who offers exorcism services for a fee, but who is actually a good guy. Sometimes they get themselves in some dangerous situations, but Mob is always spectacularly powerful.
Whenever Mob's emotions reach critical mass, he overflows with energy. It's not necessarily destructive, because it depends on what he is feeling the most, such as anger, sadness or even gratitude. Things get dangerous more often once he encounters other paranormal people for the first time. In the second half of each season, there is even an evil organization he has to deal with after having his brother accidentally mistaken for him.
A series of accidents leads to greater perils, all the while Mob grows, not in power, but as a person. As a common teenager if not for his powers, he must face decisions and consequences in both battles and in his private life. After all, it is not easy being a shy, tiny and slow-minded student when he wants to do well in exams and talk to the girl he likes.
I.e., at first, he tries to become more popular in order to get the attention of a girl he likes by joining a body training club. This is actually a very good idea because leads him to nurture friendships, but even more so because his body has always been so weak since he had previously relied on his powers instead of his muscles.
Mob Psycho 100 is a very wholesome anime I might even transition into the manga, despite of how satisfying both seasons end. Of course, I thoroughly recommend it.
