Introduction

The idea of writing this article came in my mind after reading a similar article from [SeventyFourSeventyFive] with title "Best Christmas Songs That Are Not Traditional Christmas Songs". And even though [SeventyFourSeventyFive] had the original idea about writing an article about the "Best Christmas Songs that are NOT Traditional Christmas songs or even carols, after reading his article on his blog, i was quickly disappointed from the songs he had chosen. Firstly, because I have completely no idea about the songs he narrated and secondly, because I was expecting a complete different list of pop songs that are labelled as "Christmas songs" without being a genuine "Christmas song" in the way that we sense what kind of Religious feast Christmas is. Therefore, in my turn of his blog about "Interesting Thoughts, That Aren't Always Mine", I have decided to write my personal list of the Top non-Christmas POP songs.

For further reading with a relevant context, I will also endorse the article from [ascentorp] with title "Where Did it All Go..."

The Christian Feast of Christmas and its true message

Without being a Professor of Religious Affairs, a Pastor or a Priest, please allow me to give my humble personal definition about what Christmas is and what Christmas it isn't... So according to me, Christmas is a religious Christian feast celebrated on 25th December every year, where the Christians all over the world of any denotation such as Orthodox, Catholics, Protestants etc celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior, who came on Earth as a humble man, born on a humble stable to teach people his Teachings for their repentance and forgiveness of their sins.

And here is an image of the birth of Jesus Christ as it is depicted on a typical Christian Orthodox icon

What Christmas it isn't, it is NOT a commercial feast of traders of any kind, who are trying to convince people of any Religion, not only Christians, but also Hindus, Muslims, or Buddhists, that we need to spend our money in materialistic goods that they sell to gift them to ourselves, to our family members, friends, colleagues without a special reason, just because everyone does so. So we need to do the same instead of donating these money to charities and to people in REAL need. [ascentorp] in his article with title "Where Did it All Go..." is completely right!

And unfortunately, it is a tradition somehow, to listen cheerful songs about Christmas and songs that have completely no relation to Christmas but they are meant to play them in commercial shopping centres and food stores manipulating us in a celebrational content but fake mood that forces us to buy more gifts that we don't really need, with money we don't really have, for people we don't really like.

Therefore, here’s a list of popular Christmas POP songs that capture the festive season's vibe but are more about love, relationships, heartbreaks, divorces and personal emotions such as melancholy rather than happiness that the traditional Christmas themes of our childhood used to bring us such as the Traditional Christmas Carols, JingleBells, Christmas Tree, etc. In fact, they actually make use of the Christmas holiday season as a backdrop for commercial end-of the-year sales rather than focusing on Christmas as a Religious Christian Feast:

The List of Non-Christmas Pop Songs.

1. Last Christmas - Wham! and George Michael

The greatest non-Christmas song of all TIMES, comes from Wham! and their a British-Cypriot singer, George Michael!

[Chorus]
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away (You gave it away)
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (Special)

How is it possible, a song talking about rejection and breaking-up can be a cheerful Christmas song? I could never understand it! Even worse, the songs brainwash its listeners by asking them never to fall in love again but to wait for someone "Special" who never arrives because he/she never exists leaving everybody feeling lonely, desolated and full of melancholy. Personally, this is the most dramatic song ever, especially for people who have broken up or divorce from their partners and they are left alone during the Christmas Holidays! And it has nothing to do with the Religious Christmas Spirit!
I will only accept it as a Christmas song, if George Michael was talking about "someone Special" referring to Jesus Christ. But I have never heard such a rumour...

2. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" - John Lennon & Yoko Ono

So this is Christmas
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you had fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

I often use this song, for my end of the year Publish0x Reviews of my articles, and for some reason it reminds me with strong melancholy my so80s childhood. It is actually a song about the end of the year with a constant everlasting broader message of anti-war and global peace, using Christmas as a popular "frame".

3. All I Want for Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you, yeah

Possibly, someone might say this song doesn't talk about breaking ups or divorces but instead it talks about desire! This is true! Starting with a contradiction about the materialistic spirit of Christmas, The word "WANT" is positioned perfectly in the song to make us WANT MORE about ourselves including another person! This is the most selfish song I have ever heard! and it isn't an accident that it is continuously played during Christmas in huge shopping centres and malls brainwashing people just to want more for themselves!

Bonus: Die Hard Movie feat. Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis is one of my favourite Hollywood actors, however, the Die Hard movie set on the Los Angeles Airport during the Christmas period is NOT a Christmas Movie. So much killing and death has nothing to do with the Christmas Spirit.

Final Thoughts

Maybe the list of pop non-Christmas songs is countless so you are free to comment your own special "non-Christmas" song. Yet, I will finish this article with an original and genuine Christmas Song, the Christian Orthodox "Hymns of Christmas" known as "Κατεβασιες των Χριστουγέννων" as it is sung from Cypriot Christian Orthodox singers during the December Sunday Mass before the main liturgy.

I really wish that in a world full of wars and misery, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ will bring a new hope for repentance and forgiveness to everyone, not only for Christians but also for Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists etc for all the people on Earth.
