Theta's Sunset: Where Do Web3 Video Believers Go Now?

By Bfab | Good vibes | 13 Apr 2025

I used to believe in Theta.tv with my whole heart. I remember staying up late in 2021, excitedly explaining to friends how this platform would revolutionize content creation—how we were witnessing the dawn of a new era where creators wouldn't be digital sharecroppers anymore. The partnerships, the technology, the vision... it all seemed so inevitable.

Then came the announcement: Theta.tv is shutting down.

I felt that familiar pit in my stomach—the same one I felt when other promising Web3 projects collapsed. It wasn't just disappointment; it was that creeping doubt: are we chasing a mirage? Is true creator sovereignty even possible?

My journey exploring alternatives to Big Tech platforms hasn't been straightforward. For every step forward, there's been a stumble. I recently published my first podcast on Wavlake https://wavlake.com/podcast/decryptlab

... Excited about Bitcoin Lightning Network micropayments creating direct connections with listeners. I've explored Fountain Radio, marveling at how sats flow to creators in real-time as content is consumed.

But video has always been the final frontier—the medium where tech feudalism feels most entrenched. YouTube's dominance is so complete that alternatives struggle to gain traction. Theta.tv was supposed to be different. It had the technology, the partnerships, the tokens. Now it's joining the graveyard of Web3 platforms that couldn't cross the chasm.

So where do we go from here? What's left for those of us still believing in the promise of decentralized video?

Odysee continues to develop its LBRY-based platform, though with less hype than during its early days. Livepeer works on the infrastructure side, potentially powering the next generation of applications. Platforms like SuperRare and Glass show how Web3 technology can work for specific content niches.

For me, this isn't just about technology preferences—it's deeply personal. Every video I upload to YouTube feels like paying rent on digital land I'll never own. Every algorithm change that throttles creator reach reminds me of feudal lords changing the terms for their serfs without consultation.

I'm not abandoning the dream. If anything, Theta's failure makes me more determined to support the platforms still standing—to help them evolve beyond speculation toward sustainable models. The Lightning Network implementations I've experienced with Wavlake and Fountain give me hope that direct value exchange between creators and audiences is not only possible but potentially transformative.

Tonight, I'll pour one out for Theta.tv. Tomorrow, I'll keep building on the platforms still fighting to free us from digital feudalism. The path is longer and more winding than I imagined, but the destination—creator sovereignty—remains worth the journey.

What about you? Where are you placing your bets in the post-Theta Web3 video landscape?
