The Binance hack is obviously bad news for the crypto industry, but as a trader, I'm also looking at the opportunities it could create.
Whenever a major player gets hit by a security incident of this magnitude, I think it's worth looking beyond the immediate market reaction. Capital doesn't necessarily leave crypto. It can simply move somewhere else.
And that's what I'm particularly interested in right now: where could traders move their money, and which projects could benefit or suffer from this shift?
I'm looking at two different groups of tokens.
First, the potential winners.
My initial attention goes to decentralized exchanges, particularly perpetual trading platforms.
HYPE is probably the most interesting one for me. Hyperliquid has already demonstrated that it can attract serious trading activity, and the Binance incident could reinforce the narrative around non-custodial trading. If traders become more concerned about keeping funds on centralized exchanges, Hyperliquid could be one of the beneficiaries. The recent increase in trading volume and open interest makes it even more interesting, although I wouldn't chase an already extended move.
ASTER is another one I'm watching. It is competing in the perpetual DEX market, and I think it could benefit from the same narrative. The key will be whether it can translate increased attention into sustained volume, new users and fees.
DYDX is also worth keeping on the radar. If traders increasingly look for alternatives to centralized derivatives exchanges, established decentralized perp platforms could attract some of that activity.
Now, the other side of the trade. Which tokens could suffer?
TRX is particularly interesting to me because of the reported movements and holdings associated with the attacker. If more of these assets are liquidated, additional selling pressure could emerge. Of course, I would first want to see actual wallet movements rather than simply assume that all the holdings can be sold.
AAVE is also on my downside watchlist. Prolonged restrictions on affected markets or concerns about collateral and liquidity could weigh on sentiment.
LINK is another token I would monitor because of its reported exposure to the stolen assets. The important question is whether those holdings are actually being moved or liquidated.
UNI could also experience volatility despite its potential upside narrative. If the market starts associating the incident with broader DeFi security concerns, the reaction could be quite different from the expected DEX rotation.
And finally, BNB. I think it is difficult to ignore the potential reputational impact on Binance and its ecosystem. However, Binance has committed to covering customer losses, so I wouldn't automatically assume that BNB is heading for a major collapse.
What am I actually looking for in the coming days?
I'm not particularly interested in blindly buying or shorting tokens just because they are associated with the incident.
For me, the real signals will come from trading activity. I'll be watching open interest, funding rates, spot CVD and volume profiles, particularly on Extended.
I want to see whether HYPE and ASTER can sustain their relative strength, whether DYDX starts attracting more volume, and whether tokens such as TRX, LINK and AAVE experience further selling pressure.
There is also an important distinction between a narrative and an actual capital rotation. Traders talking about moving away from Binance doesn't necessarily mean they are doing it.
My current watchlist therefore includes HYPE and DYDX on the potential bullish side, and TRX and BNB on the bearish side.
Personally, I find the decentralized perpetual exchange narrative particularly interesting. If this incident makes traders reconsider where they keep their funds and where they execute their trades, some existing DeFi platforms could benefit considerably.
But I also think the next few days could be very volatile, and I would rather wait for confirmation than chase the first market reaction.
What about you? Are you looking to buy the potential winners of this incident, or do you think there are better short opportunities among the tokens directly exposed to it?
Let's see where the money flows next.
