Ethereum Rollups: zkSync Vs. Arbitrum

Ethereum Rollups: zkSync Vs. Arbitrum

By Bfab | Good vibes | 24 Mar 2023

The Arbitrum airdrop has been huge and has attracted a lot of new users and value on its network. As you may know, Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup built on top of Ethereum (ETH) mainnet which partly inherits from its security. The optimistic rollups are convenient. However, they would not offer the same level of security as the Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proof rollups like zkSync or Starknet. Unfortunately, these ZK rollups still need to attract more users and value to compete with optimistic rollups like Arbitrum, and hence they also need to launch their tokens and make airdrops. Could it be as huge as Arbitrum airdrop? Let's have a look.

How much did Arbitrum airdrop?

Arbitrum airdropped 1.1 billion of their Arbitrum (ARB) tokens. As the price is currently around USD 1.5, it makes a total amount of USD 1.65 billion. The highest allocation per address was 10,250 ARB tokens, i.e., around USD 15k as of today. The list of eligible wallets represents 625,143 addresses.

What are the next big airdrops?

The TVL (Total Value Locked) on Arbitrum is currently about USD 6.14 billion. Therefore, you can easily calculate the airdrop/TVL ratio is about 0.27. There is indeed a correlation between the total airdropped amount and the TVL of the chain. As we can expect that the next big airdrops will come from other Ethereum rollups which have not launched their token yet, we can have a look at their TVL and use the same airdrop/TVL ratio to estimate the airdrop:

In the list above, the next rollup in TVL which has not yet launched its token is zkSync, divided in two parts: zkSync Lite (1.0) and zkSync Era (2.0). Its TVL is currently about USD 90 million. By applying the 0.27 ratio above, it means that their airdrop could be about USD 25 million. If it had to be distributed to as many addresses as Arbitrum airdrop, it would make an average allocation per address around USD 40. As there are less users on zkSync, we can assume that the number of eligible addresses will be an order of magnitude below, and hence the airdrop could be worth a few hundreds USD...

How to be eligible to the next airdrops?

You just need to make so simple actions, like bridging a bit of your Ethereum (ETH) coins to zkSync through a bridge like orbiter.finance, and swapping some of these coins for tokens through a decentralized exchange like ZigZag, on which you can find ERC20 and non-ERC20 tokens to trade. Another way to participate (free of charge) and potentially get eligible to the future airdrop (without guarantee) is to achieve some simple quests through crew3.xyz. By clicking on this link, you will access a list of quests going from retweeting messages to answering quizzes that might be worth a few hundreds USD.
