I’ve been looking for interesting opportunities in the market lately, and one thing I keep coming back to is the relationship between price and the 50 day and 200 day moving averages.
My goal is simple: find assets that have corrected enough to offer an interesting entry point, without necessarily losing their longer term uptrend. I also want to avoid chasing assets that have already rallied too far.
Here are five assets I’m keeping an eye on over the coming days and weeks.
1. Qualcomm (QCOM): A Potential Value Opportunity
Qualcomm is one of the stocks I find interesting at current levels.
The share price closed around $172, below its 50 day moving average near $175, but still slightly above its 200 day moving average around $169.
This is an interesting setup because the stock is correcting while remaining close to its longer term trend support.
Qualcomm also has an established semiconductor business, exposure to wireless connectivity and opportunities in automotive and other markets.
The main risk is that the price could break below the 200 day moving average and extend its decline. I would prefer to see some stabilization before considering an entry.
2. Ethereum (ETH): A Correction Worth Watching
Ethereum is another asset on my watchlist.
At around $2,403, ETH was approximately 6% below its 50 day moving average of $2,553, while remaining nearly 12% above its 200 day moving average of $2,147.
This suggests a meaningful correction within a longer term trend that has not yet clearly broken down.
Ethereum has several potential catalysts, including DeFi activity, staking and institutional adoption. However, competition from other blockchains and changes in network activity remain important risks.
For me, the key question is whether ETH can stabilize and eventually recover its 50 day moving average.
3. Solana (SOL): More Upside Potential, More Risk
Solana shows a somewhat similar pattern.
At approximately $103.50, SOL was around 5% below its 50 day moving average of $109.40, while remaining more than 18% above its 200 day moving average of $87.50.
That could create an interesting opportunity if the correction starts to lose momentum.
Solana benefits from activity across DeFi, decentralized applications and its broader ecosystem. At the same time, SOL is volatile and can experience much sharper drawdowns than Bitcoin.
I would therefore treat it as a higher risk opportunity rather than a core defensive position.
4. Cisco (CSCO): A More Established Technology Business
Cisco is worth considering for investors who prefer an established technology company.
The stock closed around $107.40, approximately 4% below its 50 day moving average of $111.60 and nearly 8% above its 200 day moving average of $99.55.
Its exposure to networking, cybersecurity and data center infrastructure provides several potential growth drivers, including demand related to AI infrastructure.
However, Cisco is not necessarily a bargain simply because its price has fallen below its 50 day moving average. Valuation, earnings growth and the company's outlook still matter.
I would watch for stabilization around current levels and a possible recovery towards the 50 day moving average.
5. Bitcoin (BTC): Watching the Trend Rather Than Chasing a Dip
Bitcoin presents a slightly different setup.
At approximately $81,491, BTC was trading almost exactly at its 50 day moving average of $81,358, while remaining around 12% above its 200 day moving average of $72,464.
Unlike ETH and SOL, Bitcoin had not moved significantly below its 50 day moving average in these observations.
For me, the important signal is whether BTC can maintain this level and resume its upward movement, or whether a sustained break below the 50 day average leads to a deeper correction.
Institutional demand, ETF flows and broader liquidity conditions could all influence the next move.
What About Micron (MU)?
Micron deserves a mention because its valuation may look attractive at first glance.
The stock closed around $879, well below its 50 day moving average near $983, but still comfortably above its 200 day moving average around $718.
Its exposure to AI memory demand and high bandwidth memory is attractive. Its forward price to earnings ratio also appears low compared with many technology stocks.
However, semiconductor earnings are cyclical, and a low forward P/E does not necessarily mean a stock is cheap if earnings expectations are close to a peak.
Given the depth of the correction, I would want to see clearer evidence of stabilization before considering a short term trade.
My Takeaway
If I had to narrow this watchlist down, I would focus on three different setups.
QCOM for a potentially interesting combination of valuation and technical positioning.
ETH for a correction within a still positive longer term trend.
SOL for a more aggressive opportunity, accepting considerably higher volatility.
Cisco is another candidate for investors who prefer an established technology business, while Bitcoin is worth monitoring closely around its 50 day moving average.
My approach would be to avoid buying simply because an asset has dropped. I prefer to see price stabilization, a higher low or a convincing recovery before entering a position.
The 50 day moving average can help identify a change in short term momentum, while the 200 day moving average provides useful longer term context. Neither indicator guarantees that a rebound will happen.
One final point: these figures are based on the latest reference closes available for October 16 for stocks and October 17 for crypto, rather than live executable prices. Market conditions can change quickly, so I would check the latest chart and fundamentals before making any decision.
