In my pursuit to know everything about GameFi and to earn an income from playing its best offerings, I must research a lot. I'm always reading and hunting for information in one way or another.
But I don't want to sit on all this data and knowledge and keep it to myself. I'm sure there are plenty of others who want to earn crypto from playing games.
So, here is everything I've learned, which is everything you need to know, about Farsite.
What is it?

Farsite is a DeFi MMO metaverse that runs on NFTs and cNFTs and is entirely owned and managed by players.
That's a mouthful, isn't it?
Farsite has lofty ambitions of being a serious metaverse contender. They have built a skeleton of a game and that skeleton is massive, but it seems they're having some trouble putting meat on the bones.
There is zero gameplay in Farsite at the moment and the team is behind on their roadmap. They did just release a developer update about all the new features they've recently added and what's in store for the summer, but it's short and not full of much.
The goal, the concept Farsite puts forward in its guides and promotional material, is to have players choose a career path, pick their ship, join a group or guild or faction, and make their place in the galaxy. With dozens of solar systems to explore on their star map, plenty of career paths available, and limitless ships to be built, Farsite is billed as an impressive project.
But right now you can do almost none of those things.
Gameplay

As previously mentioned, there is no gameplay per se. But that doesn't mean there is nothing to do in Farsite. When you first log in, you'll be given a starter ship. In order to earn components and outfit your ship with a weapon or mining laser, you'll need to capitalize on some airdrops. There are also simple tasks to complete to gain some items, like tweeting about the game, commenting on their Youtube videos, or inviting friends to join. Once you've completed enough tasks, the game will reward you with some items to compliment your ship.
If you want to get deeper into the game, you'll have to invest some money. Buying a crate is a great way to get yourself some Credits--the in-game currency used for everything--and some helpful items. You may even obtain some blueprints for a new ship while you're at it.
If you're fine with your dinky starter ship, then take your Credits and get to exploring. Recently Farsite opened up sector exploration and purchasing, allowing players to purchase digital property on whatever planet they want. Once the owner of a sector, you can mine and harvest the resources from that sector.
Harvesting and mining make up the backbone of Farsite's economy. In order to build new ships, components, modules, electronics, weapons--ANYTHING--you'll need minerals and ore and all sorts of raw elements.
But if you decide to just purchase Credits, you can just purchase resources as well. Who needs a sector when you have the marketplace?
Farsite has plans to incorporate FTL travel, factions, career paths, and a ship marketplace. But for now, you can still get in early with sectors, resources, and mining.
Developers & Backers
Farsite is developed by SUPERNOVAE, a blockchain gaming company that's "pioneering" NFT technology. SUPERNOVAE, however, is shady as hell. They have woefully little information online anywhere, and their website doesn't seem to be updated much.
SUPERNOVAE is clearly shy of public interest. They also do not display who they're made up of. I had to search high and low just to find some initials of their CFO and COO.
All in all, a little sketchy.
Their Twitter is not very active, neither is Farsite's for that matter, and they are nowhere to be found on their Discord channel. Players will regularly go days or weeks without getting support or answers to their questions, which isn't a good look for such an ambitious project.
Farsite does have money behind it, but not the same numbers as Star Atlas or Axie Infinity. With OpenSea, DappRadar, and Dapper listed as their backers, they aren't without friends, but they certainly don't have many.
Making Money In Farsite

Is totally possible. But it's not free. You need to have money to make money, as they say.
If you want to start making revenue from Farsite, you'll need to make a sizeable investment. Your best bet is to purchase a sector. Several, actually. Ships are cool and each one is unique and you can sell them on secondary marketplaces, but that incurs fees and takes work and time. Buy yourself some sectors, start mining everything you can from them, and sell whatever you don't need on the marketplace. Use what you've harvested to grow your own facilities, build your base, enhance your refineries, and construct ships.
And bide your time. Wait.
Sell whatever you don't need on the marketplace. If you're making ships consistently, you can burn them for components or sell them on the soon-to-be-released ship marketplace.
The economy of Farsite is entirely run by the players. So if there's no Raydon to purchase, maybe you should find a sector that produces Raydon and get as much as you can. If you see a need in an industry, you can fill it however you please.
You cannot start mining or harvesting without a sector or Credits, and you can't get Credits without purchasing a crate from Farsite. And you can only purchase crates with ETH right now.
So. Want to make money?
Start off with some ETH in your wallet. Buy some crates, get some Credits, get a sector. Then get more sectors. Refine and harvest and mine, then build and construct and raise. Finally, you turn around and sell, sell, sell.
Should You Play Farsite?

Everyone has different goals with their portfolios and there are multiple paths to any goal. If your goal is to start growing your crypto portfolio from a smaller-sized investment, Farsite isn't the best choice. On one hand, it is still in Pre-Alpha and if you were to get into the game now, you'd still be getting in early. But on the other hand, the game is behind schedule, run by people who work at their leisure, and not user-friendly.
If your goal is to maintain your portfolio and you have some good-sized chunks of money to throw around, you could position yourself very nicely if this metaverse should explode. Heck, just go buy a planet. Buy every sector on that planet and make it yours. Build whatever you want. You could potentially run this economy; it is run entirely by the players after all. You'd need a several thousand dollar investment and some dedicated time to begin your harvesting empire, but the profit is there. Maybe.
In Summation
Maybe MMO crypto games are still a little far off. Like most of the good metaverses. If you've got a tower defense, deck-building, or RTS game, that'll probably translate well into a blockchain game. But if you want to create one of the most ambitious MMO projects in history that's run entirely by its players, you need to bring your A-game. Your A++-game. And, if I'm being honest, it doesn't feel like SUPERNOVAE brought their best to this.
I like Farsite. It seems awesome and I'm hopeful it's shepherded to the finish line by developers who want to build an awesome community. But I'm hesitant. Lack of community engagement, lack of transparency, and lack of reliable results all culminate to keep me from saying I'm bullish on this.
For now, I'll stick with their airdrops and weekly tasks to gain items. But if I see the team show some dedication and commitment, I'm ready to jump right in.
And that, friends, is everything you need to know about Farsite.
Questions, concerns, critiques, comments?
Do you play Farsite? Own any sectors? Making good money? Enjoying the game?
