Lighthouses have been very important to sea voyages since ancient times. These structures, which help ships to stay away from dangerous rocks, especially in stormy weather, are still used today.
Now, let's take a look at some of the most dangerous lighthouses in the world together.
Strombolicchio Lighthouse
If you have the chance to sail to the north of the Italian island of Sicily, you can see one of the most incredible volcanoes in the world, Stromboli. This volcano is located 924 meters above the sea surface. It has been an active volcano for almost 2000 to 5000 years. As you can imagine, this makes it dangerous for ships to pass through this area. For this reason, the lighthouse was built in the 1920s to make the passage through the area safer. In fact, the site consists of a small basalt column believed to be the core of an ancient volcano that eroded 200,000 years ago. On the other hand, living inside this lighthouse, which was only 1 kilometer away from the volcano in the past, is extremely dangerous. This lighthouse, which was automated in 1991, has not been inhabited since.
Saint Joseph Lighthouse
Located at the entrance to the Saint Joseph River on Lake Michigan, the Saint Joseph Lighthouse is a beautiful place to visit most of the year. This picturesque lighthouse was built in 1832 and differs from many other lighthouses by its long walk. This walking path is extremely safe during the summer months. But in winter it becomes quite slippery. The reason for this is that cold water accumulates in the region and freezes here. In fact, even though this place looks beautiful from the outside, if you don't want to slip and fall on the ice-filled shore, do not even think of taking this walking path in winter.
Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse
When you think of dangerous lighthouse locations, you probably think of choppy seas or cold polar waters, right?
The Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse stands in a separate spot as it was nearly destroyed by the sandbanks. This lighthouse was once located next to several buildings on the beach, and while it functioned from 1900 to 1968, we see that the surrounding coastline soon began to erode. In the 2000s, things got so bad that many experts said the force of the sand would cause the lighthouse to collapse by 2020, and the area was completely abandoned. However, in October 2019, this structure was taken in 70 meters from the seaside and its lifespan was extended until 2060.
So, which lighthouse did you like the most?
