Learning about the liberal thought of the Austrian School of Economics

I will refer to the book by its title in my language which is "The Six Lessons" but the original title in the United States is "Liberalism: in the Classical Tradition"

Last year I was in charge of picking up my mother from work, and many times when I arrived she still had to stay after hours and I ended up spending some time sitting on a bench waiting for her to leave, and I thought why not read a good book!

I heard about this book "The Six Lessons" all the time on Fernando Ulrich's channel, a Brazilian economist trained in the liberal thought of the Austrian school, and I decided to download it on my cell phone to read, and I really liked it a lot. He emphasizes the great poverty in which people lived in the transition from feudalism to the industrial era, citing situations where the first workers coming from rural areas to work in the industries didn't even have shoes to wear on their feet.1f042f572d8bf4cdb34abdc0893334ccb86e2a09dba50370857b400967d74ab0.png

Follow this summary that I will leave below, it is a good read to demystify the "evil" of capitalism: The Six Lessons of Ludwig von Mises, one of the main thinkers of the Austrian school of economics, is a work that stands out for its clarity and depth. In this book, he presents his ideas on political economy and society in an accessible and direct way.

The content of this book was based on lectures that he gave in Buenos Aires and is a valuable introduction to liberal thought that defends individual freedom and the functioning of free markets. Mises argues that capitalism is the only system that allows the creation of wealth and the improvement of people's standard of living. Contrary to what many people think, capitalism is not a fight of everyone against everyone, but rather a system where people, in pursuing their own interests, end up generating benefits for society as a whole. Economic freedom, private initiative and competition are fundamental to prosperity.

Mises argues that socialism, by abolishing private property and free competition, creates an insufficient and unsustainable system. He explains that without prices to guide the allocation of resources, socialism cannot respond effectively to the needs and desires of society. The lack of accurate information and the centralization of power are the biggest problems of this system.

In the book, he explains that interventionism is the attempt to combine elements of capitalism with government controls. By intervening in the economy, the government ends up distorting prices, harming free competition and creating more problems than solutions. With each intervention, more disruption is caused and the economy becomes more inefficient.

According to Mises, inflation is the result of excessive currency issuance. When the government prints money without backing it up with real wealth, the currency loses its value and directly affects people's purchasing power. He warns that inflation not only impoverishes citizens but also creates economic uncertainty, harming investment and wealth creation. Without a solid understanding of how the economy works, any economic policy will fail. Mises emphasizes that defending liberal ideas and education are essential to promoting a system that values freedom and prosperity.

The Six Lessons is a book that provides a clear view of Ludwig von Mises' thinking and is an excellent introduction to the concepts of the Austrian school. Mises defends the importance of individual freedom, the free market, and the limitation of state power. For those seeking to understand the flaws of centralized economic systems and the virtues of capitalism, this book is a great read. It teaches us that public policies must be based on respect for freedom and the promotion of prosperity for all.
