My English-Maths lesson

My English-Maths lesson

One interesting thing about the educational system in Singapore is that it has a Student Learning Space, which allows students to learn online. In its recent update, it allows teachers to embed their Goggle Docs document into the online portal so that students can work on it at the same time and work collaboratively. This, of course, means more work on my plate because I have to come up with the Google Docs assignment. But rather than treat it as a chore, I take it as an opportunity to do things that are out of the box for me. Hence, this English-Maths lesson.

You went for an exciting camp with your classmates and teachers in Term 1. Due to this terrific experience, you are keen to be involved in the planning process for other camps. Your principal has come across a website listing two camps. She would like your recommendation on one that would be suitable for you and your school mates.

The first camp is a metaverse camp that will enable students to immerse themselves in a virtual world.

The second camp is a financial literacy camp that aims to help students make wise decisions about money.

Read through the description of both camps. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these two camps with your group mates. Use the PEEL (Point, Explain, Example, Link) approach to come to a consensus about the camp your team likes more.

Which camp does your team like more?

Now that your team has made a decision, write a formal email to your principal to recommend one of these camps for secondary three students in the school.

After writing the email to your principal, you find yourself curious about the pricing. You visit the camp organisation’s website and read the following poster about the price of the camp your team has chosen.

Answer the following questions.

Pre-tax

1) How much is the early bird discount?

2) If you sign up early and qualify for the early bird discount, how much must you pay for the camp?

3) There are 200 secondary three students in your school. If your school qualifies for the early bird discount, how much must it pay for the camp?

Post-tax

4) In Singapore, we must pay a Goods and Services Tax (GST) for most products and services. How much is the GST in Singapore?

5) How much is the GST levied on the camp?

6) When GST is included, how much must your school pay for the camp for one student?

Have fun collaborating with one another!
