My advice to parents

My advice to parents

I think I’m reasonably good at my teaching job. When someone asked this question in a chat full of concerned parents, “What are your plans for P5 during the Nov Dec period?” I was able to type the following reply rather decisively:

Focus on the big ticket items (Compre and compo)
Read a past year comprehension passage. Build up the reading stamina. Insist that the child does annotations (difficult vocabulary, character traits, feelings of characters, what does this passage remind me about?)
Recognising the feelings of the main character is particularly important because emotional awareness is a theme that permeates throughout the O levels
Be disciplined to check the meaning of unknown words. Don’t rush through the process. ideally, the child should copy all these definitions in a Vocabulary book. Spend enough time with a passage so that words like sheepishly / gingerly / quizzically / caught in a dilemma appear organically in the child’s compo.
Guide the child to do transference. Take out past compos and see if he can enhance the vocabulary by incorporating words that he has extracted from the passage. PSLE passages will contain high-utility Show Not Tell phrases. Get your child to “steal” these phrases and embellish his compo.

If the child is motivated, he should be doing the comprehension questions as well.
If the child wants to take it easy, rinse and repeat the process with another Compre passage. Building the stamina and acquiring good vocabulary is better than nothing

Have garnered seven likes for my above response. I know better than to base my self-worth on likes from people whom I don’t even know in real life, but I’m not gonna lie. It felt good. As if I’m an expert haha
