Kai Le Sensei is awesome and here’s why:
It’s not an exaggeration that my son has an avalanche of toys - and I’m facing increased stress not just from having to keep track of all his precious possessions, but also from playing detective to hunt for his missing ones. So tonight, I introduced the Japanese concept of Danshari to him. I will define it as the audacity to throw.
I leveraged the Gradual Release of Responsibility to great effect, so read and learn from Kai Le Sensei.
First, I told my boy that he doesn’t like Thomas the engine, so he should throw it away. He agreed readily.
Second, I upped the ante and asked him to choose between two Milo trucks. He wavered for a while but was able to throw away the golden-coloured truck.
Last, I suggested that he should throw away his sad-looking empty dinosaur truck. But he explained that his dinosaurs wouldn’t have any truck to load onto, so that was that. I then gave him full autonomy and made him choose one truck to dispense with. He was able to pick one Volvo truck that he hardly plays with anymore.
So proud of him for being able to Danshari.
So proud of myself for introducing this invaluable life skill.
