English spelling is so confusing. Did you know that we don’t double x because it is pronounced as ks? So, we spell words like taxing and relaxing.
However, we spell doxxed.
But on the other hand, we double p because qu in equip is regarded as kwip, so only the vowel i is taken into account. Hence, equipped
