Yishun Primary School first launched Project T.E.S. in 2018. Project T.E.S was aimed not just to raise awareness of the serious issue of food wastage in Singapore, but also, to empower students with the chance to separate food waste from non-food items. Since the food waste would be converted to dry compost and subsequently used in our mushroom cultivation programme for primary three students, Project T.E.S also killed two birds with one stone as students gained greater ownership of the way they contributed to the vitality of a signature science programme.   The food waste weighing records show that a daily average of 10.9kg of food waste had been collected since 2023-2025. Owing to a breakdown in the food waste composting machine, Project T.E.S. was put on hiatus in Term 1 of 2026, which explains the absence of food waste data pertaining to this year.   Yishun Primary School is currently in the midst of discussion with Mdm Sangeetha, a lecturer from Republic Polytechnic. A preliminary discussion on 12 May 2026 surfaced four methods we could employ in regard to the next stage of Project T.E.S: black soldier flies, DIY enzymes, earthworms, and machine composting.   After researching the various options, it was decided that black soldier flies were the most viable organic composting option due to the ease of implementation of Project T.E.S. as well as the pedagogical value it affords to Yishunites.   • Adults look like black, wasp-like flies. • Larvae are thick, greyish-white and wriggly. • Primary 3 students will consolidate their understanding of the four-stage life cycle (egg → larva → pupa → adult) through their participation in Project T.E.S.   Having an organic composting site manned by black soldier flies gives rise to the opportunity for students to broaden their horizons since various companies like Ento Industries and Insectta leverage the power of black solder flies in their operations.   Venue: A black soldier fly organic composting site that is situated next to our Integrated Farming System would be ideal as it consolidates the Science department’s efforts in urban farming and sustainability. Although black soldier flies are harmless, it would be preferrable if netting be installed around the site so that the flies are unlikely to escape from the site. Duration of project: Term 2 Target Audience: Primary 3 students as they would be learning about the life cycles of animals. • Add food waste gradually so that it does not pile up • Add dry materials such as dry leaves to control the moisture inside the composting bins • Ensure the provision of a drainage system so that excess liquid can flow out easily, without risk of the grounds looking unsightly.
