An Obstacle in Our Path

By soyernesto | Curious Nook | 2 May 2025

Hello Hive friends! Today I want to talk to you about perfectionism. Yes, as much as I deny it, I am a perfectionist, and this is not always a good thing. I would like to share my opinions and reflect on this topic. I hope you join me.

Without a doubt, many of us are affected by perfectionism: that need to do everything right the first time and that irrational fear of failure. We feel that we are never enough, that we do not achieve perfection in everything we do. Every task becomes a headache. This sometimes hinders our progress and distances us from our satisfaction, making our lives more difficult.

Perfectionism affects our mentality and attitudes. We constantly seek to achieve unattainable standards, which subjects us to exhausting pressure. Although this may seem useful at first, we end up filled with stress, anxiety, and frustration. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to achieve perfection in all aspects of our lives. With this comes the fear of failing and not being good enough, accompanied by a constant search for approval from others. We feel valued only for our achievements and how others perceive us. We believe that if we do not meet our standards, we will be rejected, which traps us in a vicious circle.

How do we combat this situation? By changing our mindset. We must recognize that absolute perfection is unreal. Think about who is totally perfect. Difficult, right? And that’s because we are human, made from our experiences and mistakes.

We must adopt a mindset of growth and continuous improvement, see mistakes as learning opportunities. Let's learn to make mistakes, giving our best effort but without seeking absolute perfection. It is important to set realistic and achievable standards and goals. Let's celebrate each progress, even if we fail. Let's value the process and learning instead of the final result. The important thing is the journey, not the destination.

Accept imperfection, allow yourself to make mistakes. Value yourself for who you are and not for your achievements. Celebrate yourself and your life. Embrace each mistake, practice self-reflection, and analyze your perspectives. Ask yourself: are these expectations you have for yourself realistic? Are they beneficial? Question and change your thoughts for more positive ones.

I always sought, and even today I still find myself doing it, perfection in my academic grades. I pressured myself in every way, even risking my health. Every exam was a process of stress and anxiety; I didn’t want to learn, I wanted a perfect grade. I distanced myself from other activities that filled me more and made me happier, and free time was a luxury I didn’t allow myself. I have tried, and still try today, because without a doubt, I will always be a perfectionist, to focus on acquiring knowledge and developing skills. This process can be hard, but you can start with some simple strategies like leaving time for yourself, setting schedules for each activity, and practicing self-care.

Today I know that absolute perfection is unreal, and although it is difficult for me to embrace each step in my progress and I still worry when things don’t go exactly as planned, I know I must let go of what is out of my control. I allow myself mistakes and know that everything I do is from my effort and enough to be happy.
