Margin: “Why should you say NO to profitable trades?”

Trading Class with Don Rafa:
Don Rafa adjusts his glasses and smiles in front of the whiteboard full of Bitcoin charts.
“Good morning, class. Today we're going to talk about how to prevent leverage from turning your account into smoke… even if your technical analysis is perfect.”
He points to the BTC chart on the screen:
“Imagine: Bitcoin is at $60,000. Your analysis says it will rise to $65,000, but it may first correct to $57,000 (-5%). You have $100 in your account. Are you in?”
A student raises his hand:
“Professor, if the analysis is correct, why not get in? It's a clear opportunity!”
“Ah, but there's one thing missing,” Don Rafa winks.
Because the broker's minimum trading volume is $1,000 (10:1 leverage), if BTC drops -5%, you lose $50... 50% of your $100 account! And if it drops -10%? You lose $100, wiped out. -15%? You owe the broker money. What's the point of getting it right if you don't live to see it?
The student frowns:
"But teacher, so I'll never trade with a small account?"
"Not exactly," Don Rafa replies, drawing a table on the board.
Trade, but choose markets where volatility won't wipe you out in a normal movement. For example:
Bitcoin: Daily volatility ±5% → Fatal risk for a $100 account.
EURUSD: Daily volatility ±0.7% → Manageable risk.
Another student chimes in:
—“What if I don’t want to change markets?”
—Then adjust your position size —Don Rafa writes the formula on the board: Maximum lot = (Equity × Risk per trade) / (Expected volatility in $)
Several students look on in confusion. One of them raises his hand:
—“Professor, that formula blew my mind more than the Bitcoin chart on a volatile day!” 😵
Don Rafa laughs:
—Calm down, kid. It’s just a fancy way of saying: ‘Don’t bet your daily bread on the market behaving well.’
Explanation in plain English:
How much are you willing to lose? (Ex: 2% of your account = $2 if you have $100).
How much can the market move against you? (Bitcoin moves ±5% per day = $3,000 in a BTC at $60,000).
Divide what you can lose by what can be moved: $2 / $3,000 = 0.00066 BTC ($39.6)
Result: You should only trade ~$40, not $1,000 as your broker requires.
Why?
Because if you trade $1,000 and Bitcoin drops 5%, you lose $50 (50% of your account).
With $40, you only lose $2. You sleep soundly and live to trade another day.
Conclusion? Either you find a broker that allows micro-lot trading or you don't trade BTC with a $100 account.
