Movie Review: The Green Inferno

I like Eli Roth. The previous films I saw of his were very well done. Cabin Fever (the original) and Hostel are very well done horror movies. Hostel Part II isn't bad at all, but not up to the level of Hostel. So when I saw that he was doing a new horror film, I was very excited to see this film. I saw that it was a cannibal horror movie and I was thinking "Damn, this is going to be a wild ride". I then finally saw the movie and it made me wish that I was re-watching Cabin Fever or Hostel because this film is an inferno to say the least.

Let's start with the positives of this film. This film is about a group of students who head out on a social activist trip to the Amazonian Rainforest to protest against a chemical company from chopping down all of the trees in the Rainforest and displacing a native tribe. The main character's father is an attorney for the UN, so she's able to pull some strings to get this trip to happen. The premise of the film is great.

Ok now that the positives are done, let's continue with the negatives of this film. Or as I'll call it, the rest of the movie. We all knew before this movie that Roth loves CRAZY shows of horror and blood and disturbing, so him making this movie was not a surprise. However, some of the scenes in this film were ridiculous. A character hilariously shitting themselves after being captures by cannibals. Another character "relieving stress" (in an obscene, non-bathroom related way, if you know what I mean) while being held captive in a cage. The typical horror tropes of "I feel like this plane is gonna crash" and "We need to get out of here". It's not well written, the scenes are ridiculous. The acting is atrocious. After seeing this film, I immediately vented about this film to my friends, then I went to cleanse my palate with Cabin Fever, where's people's skin falls off, because it is such a better written, filmed and acted movie.

Roth shared script writing duties with Guillermo Amoedo, in his English-language debut. Unfortunately, his debut was very lackluster, but I wonder just how much say he had in this script because the gore and the ridiculous and unnecessary humor matches Roth's MO. But, I haven't seen any of Amoedo's previous work, so I'm not too sure about what his writing style is like. The humor/horror mixture did work for Roth in his previous work, but this specific film just fell very very flat and it's a horror in and of itself, not to mention an embarrassment to the works of the Italian cannibal horror movies of the 70s and 80s that Roth has stated that this was inspired by. This is a HUGE must miss. If you are ever thinking about watching this film, please watch Cabin Fever or Hostel instead.
