Donald Trump on Bitcoin: 'A Lot of People Are Doing It'
Former US President Donald Trump discussed bitcoin and the upcoming presidential election in an interview with Fox News along with US Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) at a town hall event in Greenville, South Carolina, on Tuesday.
Given his strong opposition to government-controlled central bank digital currencies (CBDC), Trump was asked whether he would accept bitcoin due to its decentralized nature and growing popularity.
“Well, a lot of people do,” Trump replied, referring to BTC. However, he stressed: "I've always liked one currency... I like the dollar." However, the former US president argued:
Presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump has acknowledged the growing popularity of bitcoin, stating that "a lot of people are doing it" and that the cryptocurrency has taken on a "life of its own." Trump further shared: "More and more I see people wanting to pay in bitcoin and you see something interesting that I can live with that one way or another." You might have to do some regulation as you know, but a lot of people accept it.
And more and more I see people who want to pay bitcoin and you see something interesting, so I can accept it one way or another. Trump was substantially more critical of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies when he was president of the United States.
"I am not a fan of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air," he wrote on Twitter (now platform X) in July 2019. Since leaving office, the former US president has launched three non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles Some had anticipated a shift in Trump's crypto stance before Tuesday's interview as pro-crypto politicians saw growing support.
When asked about what's at stake in November's election given everything he faces, Trump replied:
I really think that the life of our country is at stake. I think this is the most important election we've ever had.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) official John Reed Stark said in September last year: “Crypto voters may be single-issue voters and a strong and passionate constituency, so perhaps former President Trump will change his stance on crypto dramatically.” Republican lawmaker Tom Emmer (R-MN) recently predicted: “If a second Trump administration occurs, the [US] president will be friendlier to the crypto industry.” While admitting he said the same thing in 2016, Trump emphasized that the current situation is significantly worse, with the problem being "magnified 10-fold." He warned: “We will lose our country, it will be a disaster, and we have to do something... We will make prices come down.
